Figured i would do a build tread for this car. Not mine doing it for a friend that collects classic cars he has a very nice collection of mustangs and thunderbirds. Car was restored long ago by a guy going to some school for body work or something. For some reason none of the underneath work was done, so that is what i am going to be doing to the car. Figured i would start with the rear because that is easy. But the car will need alot of front work, will be doing torque boxes, toe boards, floors, rail extensions, and probably some front rail work. Trying to keep it to where we dont have to do any paint work as the paint is pretty nice on the car. Thats why the rear tail panel brace is cut in half to keep from having to weld on the rear panel.

I love the looks of those old California Special Mustangs. The taillights, emblems, stripes, spoiler, all make for a very cool looking Mustang. It has that "special" look, not quite GT not quite Shelby. Just right IMO. Many years ago I used to know where one was sitting out in a field next to another non CS Mustang. The CS was black and looked badass, especially sitting next to a non CS. I was fond on the CS from then on.
Good luck on the build.

Lucky most of the panels that touch the outer body were replaced the first time and most of the replacement I have to do will be covered by the rear valance ect so just can touch that up without painting anything that will be visible. Although the truck drop off I will have to do a little paint under the quarter. He's a great guy always says whatever you think just wants to drive the car.Originally posted by flstci71 View PostLooks like a lot of work, but a great project. How are you going to be able to weld to those outer panels without having to do some paint work? It seems like your friend is tying one of your hands behind your back for this, maybe even both.

Did not get to much chance to work on it tonight as i found out that the audi has been shredding its timing belt if anyone has any idea why it would be pushing the belt back into the motor feel free to let me know. If it was going the other way it would make since but its not.
Anyways the rear cross member i decided i am going to splice in to keep the factory stamp on it. As i have been working on the car i found out that most of the replaced sheet metal was factory nos so gonna try to keep the stamps on the car as best i can. Also have to do a patch to the outer wheel well as the lip where it met the drop off was rusted away. Hopefully since the lady is away tomorrow ill have alot more time to work on it and get it all ready for when i get the rail on Monday so i can just throw that in and have it done early next week.

Ya i have always love the CS knew they were rare but never realized that only 3000 or so. My dad found the car for him and told him to buy it as he would never lose on it. Ended up paying 10k for the car. If all goes well should pretty easy double that although he is itching to just drive the car.Originally posted by CleanLX View PostI love the looks of those old California Special Mustangs. Had to take a few days off got some metal in my eye that had to be removed. But i did get the new patch put in for the rear cross member and put the rail patch in still some welding to do. Also have to make one patch for the outer wheel well and than install the trunk floor and should be good to go in the rear.

Had time finally to get some work done. Was able to get the outer wheel well patch pretty much done and the rail fully welded in. Took a little bit because i wanted to put the trunk floor in to make sure everything lined up before fully welding it all in. So a little seam sealer and just put the trunk floor back in and the rear should be done.

Had an hour to get some work done. So fitted the trunk floor and welded it mostly in few more spot welds and should be good, nice and tight with the frame. The bottom shows the patch to the outer wheel well that i had to make due to the edge was rusted off and alot of thin metal in the area just covered with some tar like stuff. Really sucked redoing someone else's work but came out alright some seam sealer should hide alot.
Hoping to bring the car back to the guys place to remove most of the front end and bring it back to my house to start the front end next week.

Well long time since i posted on this, moved, quick deployment, life so the cars sat for a while. Still have this one but my father bought it from the guy i was doing it for. Finally got around to the front of the car, patch rails, new rail extensions, torque boxes, passenger side full floor, and both toe boards. All while still not dissembling the car and not damaging the paint so its been quite a pain in the ass.
The pass side i did a full rail extension as im doing the full floor anyways, had to patch the rail and do the torque box, havent gotten around to the floor yet.
Drivers side alot was still good just not the tq box area, so i replace the inner side of the rail and rail extension, then did half the torque box and just a section of the toe board. In the end on this side you should see nothing.
Also picked up a new car 73 vert rust free using the other car from on here as a parts car for it.
The 65 still has yet to move much.

I really like the color of that car. Blue/white is my favorite combo. I hope you didn't give up on it.Originally posted by CleanLX View PostI love best weight loss shakes and the looks of those old California Special Mustangs.
