Shit happens. Maybe they made a bunch of terribly irresponsible decisions; maybe they just held on to their old lifestyle too long before they realized he wasn't going to be able to make that kind of money again.

If you lost your job, how long would you wait before you sold all your shit (assuming someone would buy it) and moved into a crappy studio apartment? Would you loose ALL your nest egg or just a large sum of it?
