Yeah, the alt-ending shows that the zombies actually developed their own culture and the reason they were attacking Dr Nevel was because he was abducting their people. It shows they had an actual reason why they were trashing his house and trying to kill him. They think HE'S the bad guy for taking zombies and doing tests on them. The boss zombie wanted his woman back.

That's kind of the whole idea of the book the movie is based on. The zombies hate Dr Nevel because he goes around killing/stealing zombies. The title of the book "I Am Legend" is a reference to Dr Nevel being a "legend" in the zombies eyes, because to them he's scary thing that kills their people and isn't affected by the day light. He's like a bigfoot to them.

The alternative ending explains why the zombies hate Will Smith.

I never understood why he got attacked all of a sudden when he had lived there for so long without much confrontation.
