Fire hydrants are not supposed to do that... They snap off at the base, I know i work for mpls water dept
Anyhow thats not un-heard off the old ones who dont break ten to drag the Stem that goes down to the valve 8ft down up out of its boot. Thus launching said hydrant 30 some ft into the air.....
I've seen it when they're chaning hydrants the old ones just screw into a cup burried about 8ft down. Well sometimes if the person forgets to turn off the gate valve that is almost always before the hydrant branch from the main they launch up like rockets and everyone has to run for cover...
This happened on my crew about 5 years ago on a 54" forced water main. It sent the hydrant almost 200ft into the sky and it landed like 50 yards away from the job site. No one got hurt but a fence got demolished lol.
