No. An HPDE (High Performance Driving Event) is basically an open track. Kind of like a test and tune session for road racing. You can get a transponder that will time your laps, but they are like $70-80 to rent...I find a video camera works just as well. Although this one guy there had a GPS unit that timed his laps, and plotted points on a map, so he could compare the lines he took lap to lap...pretty cool, but I don't even want to know how much that system costs.

HPD1 and HPD2 teach you how to drive a road course and basic passing. HPD3 and 4 are increased passing in fast traffic. In 4, you can rent a transponder and time your laps. You can also enter the TT (time trials) and compete against others lap times.

After lunch on Sunday, most of the drivers were told to move the HPD3 for the next event. Alot more passing is allowed.

Driving hard for 20 mins in heat is a decent workout.

You have to progress through each session? I've been road racing alot (just not in a full size car). Just curious I wouldn't have a problem with it...however I dunno about having a instructor telling me what lines to take etc.

what kind of transponders do they use because I have one from go kart racing you could probably borrow if they are the same (it costed like 300 bucks and I hardly use it anymore.)

You actually have to go to class too. Skip class and you don't get your pass to the track.

The instructors are still helpful if you have not been to that particular track before. They help you learn the course quicker telling you which turns are late or early apexes. You can sign up for HPDE2,3 or 4 when you register for a NASA event, and in those classes, you don't have to have an instructor with you, but you can get one if your want one.

Pretty sure you can. You pick from a list which group to be in when you register.

There are only three more scheduled events with NASA this year.
Autobahn in Joliet, IL July 21-23
                              Mid-Ohio August 12-13
                              Road America October 21-22
Check out the events forum. A few TCS-ers are going to them...not sure if I'll make it to any more this year though.
