    Electrical Question. 220v

Easy question. I want to connect my compressor, and I want to hardwire it into the box. I haven't done much electrical but I remember I hooked this up at my last place.

    These wires.

    To this box.

First I would verify that I have 120V at each the red and black wires in the second box before making any connections.
If so, then I would connect it as follows:

      1st picture - 2nd picture
      Black............Black
      White...........Red
      Green.......... Bare copper
...................White (not used in this situation)

The white in you second picture is a neutral and is used to complete a 110v circuit which you're not connecting at this point.

Verify each wire with a meter first. The white wire should be a neutral, but having no idea who installed this I would make sure white isn't hot.

Your typical house has 220 with a central neutral coming into it.

Normally when you have black, red, white and a neutral the black and red should be your hot (220 volt). If you go from black to white or red to white you would have your 110 volt circuits.

If you're just running a compressor you would only need the black, red and ground.

The picture you are showing would be typical for an electric drier circuit. The still need the 220 volt, but the also have circuits running 110 volt. That is why they also run the neutral wire.

edit...As said verify the wires first. You never know who ran the wires and if they knew what they were doing.

                I disagree.
