Made It Home Alive Today (long)

    • Why Me?

So I've been workin' in Hopkins. Well I was there this morning (last day), and I was supposed to head up to Champlin for the next job, but I got diverted and had to go to a Target way the hell up in Buffalo MN instead

So I get up there... I know the 2 guys up there already runnin' this gig, good guys I s'pose, but the job itself is a MESS! Nothing's organized, 20 dudes and about 8 scissors lifts crammed in one smaller area goin' like hell tryin' to get their shit in as these F'n walls are goin' up already... one of those jobs

So getting past the long drive, and the jacked up job... I'm driving home at the end of the day, and I get maybe 5 miles down hwy 55 and I see this Excurison off to the side on the other side of the road w/a tire blown to shit, and a gal w/a spare tire out and no one else around and it looked like she was gonna try and tackle the job. I zip past... think for a sec... sigh... pullover, turn around and go back. I hop out, notice she has no clue what to do (she was just about to put the lug wrench onto the plastic center cap )

I ask 'er if she's got someone on the way. She says "Yah, but he's way the hell across town"... Damn.
So I say "Well... I'll take a look here and see if I can help ya' out". She just got a bottle jack out, and I was leary right away, especially since I think a part was missing. But I gave it a shot. Well no matter what, that wasn't workin'. So... I busted out a crappy scissors jack out of the Cav. I was leary about this too, cuz I also think I'm missin' something for it, but I gave it a shot. After the truck almost fell off it ( ) and bent it, I threw that to the grass.

Meanwhile... I'm layin' about 6 inches off of hwy 55 between Rockford & Buffalo, tryin' to get one of these POS jacks to work, and people are still just flyin' past us! All I can think of is all the vids I've see from squad cameras where people have gotten taken out on the side of a freeway, and also the poor kid that just bit it not long ago helpin' some lady in the same situation. I'm gettin' sand blasted as cars/trucks are whippin' by. I told the gal that I'd be right back, and that I was gonna go buy a better jack, cuz I always meant to anyways. So I whip back to Target and get the last AC Delco mini-jack they had left, and rush back.

I get back, and still can't get enough good ground to make this jack work. She was pulled over kinda far off the road (understandably so), so there wasn't much tar left to set shit on underneith. I'm still leary of this small jack on such a big truck.
I say to 'er "of course when you want a cop, one's not around". She tells me like 3 or 4 passed her and never stopped! Lovely.

    PART 2:

Well for safety's sake, I abandoned the lil' jack idea too. On the way to get that thing, I noticed a garage. So I told 'er to sit tight, and that I was gonna head back up the road and go to that garage and see if I can borrow a real jack, or see if one of them can help before they close. So I run there, and have a guy run me up the big jack. About then a Sheriff finally pulls over... but in front of us. He hops out and we're all lookin' at it, and he's worried about the location... tell me about it! People were still flyin' by! I ended up tellin' him that I'm gonna have to have her either pull forward and up a bit so she's off the shoulder more so I can get under the axle safely, or she'd have to back up more and get the back out more. I'm leaning down at the tire (rear), and he's standing watching traffic. Then he's like "oh, watch it!" and pushes me into the truck almost, as I look up to see this big ol' fuckin' white Caddy damn near take us all out as he zings by! I then say "yah I think you better put your cruiser behind us"! He readily agreed.

He pulls out and stops traffic, then turns the squad around and pulls in behind us and slightly out into the lane w/lights on so everyone would slow down. She moved the truck carefully so I could get udner there better. NOW I'm finally gettin' somewhere, and safely. Got all the lugs off... the wheel won't come off ...I hate this shit. So there's me and a sheriff bootin' the shit outta this rim... to no avail. I grab a 3lb. persuader hammer outta the Cav, and start beatin' the shit outta the inside of the wheel with it. FINALLY it comes off... and I whip the spare on and we pick up all the crap and everyone is on there way. I'm thanked from the gal more than a couple times... which is all I needed to hear.. but I sure wish I could of replied with a "yah, no problem!"... cuz that wasn't the case!

After that, my drive hit insane traffic... and some dumb bitch almost takes out the Cav as one minute she's to the left of me, I glance down for a nano-second, look up and she's merging into my lane and into me if I wouldn't of slammed on the binders!
    Grrrrrr.... WHAT a F'n day!!

Yeah, get in the back of the Excursion and fold down the baby-maker. Or at least a little :blow: Ohh and BTW, This is obvoiusly a little late, but on the Excursions, Ford and Firestone is recalling the Steeltex LT265/75/16 ROWL 8ply OE tire because of customer complaints. It seems that Ford (in their infinite wisdom), wanted to save $$ and only put an 8 ply tire on. Well, with the GVWR and towing tongue weight of the Excursion... you guessed it, exceeds the weight rating of the tire. Another piont, I think that it should be mandatory for you to be able to change a tire and jump-start a car to get your drivers license. Glad you made it home, instead of being a huge grease stain on Hwy. 55.

good job, and I agree everyone should know how to change a tire and jump start a battery before getting or renewing thier licsense.

                              Heh heh.. Thanks all

She was alright lookin'... didn't really matter! I just went by, seen the tire had de-treaded itself, and seen she was alone and lookin' like she was gonna try and tackle it herlelf... and thought that there's no way she's gonna get that herself w/out gettin' hurt w/all this traffic zingin' down this stretch. She's just lucky it happened on a night where I didn't have to blast home and over to my class cuz I wouldn't of been able to stop. Also it's a good thing it was a rear tire and not the front the way that pos thing came apart!
I would never own a Firestone truck tire... ever. 8-ply, 10-ply, I don't care. I've never liked 'em, and doubt I ever will. I've never cared for looks, design, or performance (or lack thereof). And that has been my feeling looong before the whole recall issue. Now their performance tires I'd consider...
