Computer Geek Warning! I am (hearting) SP2

I just finished with getting Win XP - SP2 on both my work machine and my laptop...

I'm loving this new release no more random ass IE problems I was having, even faster boot up, shut downs aren't taking 3 days anymore...

Sorry if this is a total waste of bandwidth but it's been a very long time since I've actually found Microsoft Updates worthwhile...

SP2 Rocks.

I was doing some tests at work, its almost impossible to get spy ware.

Firewall is getting better, needs to monitor outbound traffic though.

i like it so far.. other than the built in popup blocker in IE now fights with my Google toolbar some, but it works none the less...

SP2 limits the ammount of tcp connections you can have, so it slows down your warez.

Oh shit, I love that feature. LOL! A lot of my old "let's crash the computer" tricks went down the tube after they did that.

not really. SP 2 has a patch out for it already. I don't think that MS picked it up yet, maybe they have.

What Punch is talking about is right on the money, they limit a pile of things taht rely on those tcp threads. IN fact, there is a list of the applications affected (negatively) by running the SP-2 for win XP.

In my world, I use most of those 50 apps that they have listed on the MS site. So I guess if you're just a regular "Joe User" then you woudn't notice anything "weird" but I think guys like Punch, Russ,Video master, and myself are pretty well aware of the list of things that SP-2 breaks.

Actually, we're not installing it on about 4500 machines. Yes, I'm a system admin too...

We've got a problem between XP-SP2 and our City Materials and Management System... whether it's in the new IE or the frickin' OS itself we haven't figured out. (Too busy working on deployment of the next update to the previously mentioned system.)

Where can I find a list of the apps? I have not had any problems yet. Most of our PCs are win 2000 still.

Most of the issues seem to be associate with the newly blocked ports by MS's latest effort to catch up with the joneses (ie linux).

If you open up the appropriate ports for your given application SP2 shouldnt pose too many problems.

true its not a huge problem, unless you are trying to push it out to 2600 - 3000 users <heh>

I think I have a link to a patch that will open most, if not all of those ports for the listed applications affected by this from MS. The patch isn't theres. I believe that it closes all remaining ports and opens only those "default" ports by application.

Of course, we would certainly NOT use the default ports for anything important now would we.... ? <Evil Grin> If you need additional ports opened or clsoed you will most likely have to do it manually.

I'd be willing to bet that someone that comes out with a frontend to check the ports at the time that the application needs it would make a lot of cash.... Until it catches on, then someone will put it out there for free. Who knows.

What are you guys using for network "checking"?

Mostly I've been using ethereal and have a linux machine on network "read only" doing packet logging with a custom analyzer...
