    computer help

On my sisters computer the hard drive clicks really loud and it will not boot up. It says windows\system\config\system and I have tried to go into the Windows XP recovery console and then it says that there is no operating system. She just wants her pics of her family off of it if possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Good luck. Clicking=dead or nearly dead hard drive.

I'll never understand why people don't back that shit up... hell, you could stick them on flickr for 20$/year.

Sometimes you can stick the hard drive in the freezer for half an hour or so, then slave it into another computer and have just enough time to pull some files off of it before the clicking gets real bad and it just quits.

Call it an urban legend, but it's worked for me.

you could try buying an external enclosure for the hard drive. Then you might be able to plug it into a usb port on another computer and possibly get the data off it

You can take it to a recovery place and pay $1500 or so.

How is this superior to just slaving it into another computer?

This has worked for me once with a HD and once with a flash drive it's worth a shot.

Grab one of these and plug the hard drive into another computer. This thing is great because it works for ANY hd - laptop/desktop IDE & SATA.

Buy Vantec 2.5" / 3.5" / 5.25" SATA / IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter - Model CB-ISATAU2 with fast shipping and top-rated customer service. Once you know, you Newegg!

Even though the drive is clicking, it doesn't mean you can't pull the data off. Another option is to get a program called Spinrite. I have used this utility to repair drives that seemed destined for the scrap heap many times over. You can either buy it for $90 or find a torrent for it. Good luck
