The criteria was: longevity, reliability, cost to operate, ease to work on.

Those are all relative. No where was it specified it has to be a production, long run motor.

I believe that is the key. the lower the horsepower, the more reliable.

Its an OHV 3.0 taurus engine fucked over to be rear-wheel drive. Or atleast after looking at them forever they sure as shit look the same....

The Cummins doesn't cut it, there's not a lot of Cummins at 250k that haven't had a substantial amount of money put into them..

Sorry, too many LS's burn too much oil, or spin bearings. For performance they could definately be mentioned, but not the criteria Sean layed out. Not hating, it's just the truth. My TBSS was on it's 3rd motor at 35K, my boss's 08 Suburban burns 2.5 quarts every 3,000 miles (dealership told him it's normal!!).
That being said I'd vote 3.8 and Iron Duke. My friends in HS had a 2.2 Omni and a 2.2 K-car, the contest was who can blow them first. We beat the FUCK out of both of them and they just kept going without skipping a beat.

my 99' 5.3 with 180k miles burned 2 quarts of oil over 15k, ive never heard of any ls motor using oil or spinning bearings.

Foreign: Dont have a lot of personal experience with Italian and German, but I would stack a Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru) over a Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan everyday of the week.

My POS Subaru had 80k on the clock when i bought it and I put another 125k on it in 4 years for work and aside from a battery, CV shaft and a fuel pressure regulator the motor was pimpin'.

I had wished it would phucking die so I could buy something else. I sold it for a grand and the new owners too it to a bad place and got broken into and busted all to pieces. I bet that motor still ran up until it got crushed.
