    Home Audio Repair - help?

I have an older Pioneer tuner/receiver (Model CX-790) and stand alone 4-Channel Amp (Model M-790) that connects to the receiver via a ribbon cable. I acquired the units cheap awhile back as-is that went into storage. They look like pretty decent quality higher end stuff. I think the amp is rated about 75W per channel. Dusted them off today and plugged them in. Nothing powered on, found main fuse blown in the amp. Temporarily bypassed fuse and everything powers up nice, display works nice, etc. Hooked a speaker up from my old setup and promptly blew it up I'm guessing amp is putting out straight 110v to speakers? Any ideas on what I could check/replace in the amp?

It's usually the driver transistors. They are the components that are mounted to the heat sinks. If they fail closed you get blow your speakers and also blow the fuses. The heart of the amp.

Edit I thought you were talking car audio. The same prolly holds true for home audio. The repiar is most likely worth more than the unit

Ah thanks, you are probably right.

If you or anybody else wants to screw with this stuff, take it away free! I'm sure the receiver works fine but my guess the amp is probably junk. If nobody wants I'll probably get a DVOM and tinker a bit then dumpster. Just kind of a shame, probably used to "pound" pretty good.

The problem with most higher end used car stereo equipment is people usually wire too many speakers is series (aka decreasing the ohm load) which ends up making the receiver driving the shit out of the speakers hooked up. Which will result in what SDK said.
