WASHINGTON -- President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.
"You can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done," he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.
One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.
"There are big things that unify Republicans and Democrats," the official said. "We shouldn't let partisan politics derail what are very important things that need to get done."
That wasn't Obama's only jab at Republicans today.
In an exchange with Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) about the proposal, the president shot back: "I won," according to aides briefed on the meeting.
"I will trump you on that."
Not that Obama was gloating. He was just explaining that he aims to get his way on stimulus package and all other legislation, sources said, noting his unrivaled one-party control of both congressional chambers.
"We are experiencing an unprecedented economic crisis that has to be dealt with and dealt with rapidly," Obama said during the meeting.
Republicans say the $825 billion price tag is too big a burden for a nation crippled by debt and that it doesn't do enough to stimulate the economy by cutting taxes.
"You know, I'm concerned about the size of the package. And I'm concerned about some of the spending that's in there, [about] ... how you can spend hundreds of millions on contraceptives," House GOP Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) later said.
"How does that stimulate the economy?"
But White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs countered: "There was a lot of agreement in that room about the notion that we're facing an economic crisis unlike we've seen in quite some time ... that we must act quickly to stimulate the economy, create jobs, put money back in people's pockets."
Gibbs disagreed with those who called the meeting window dressing.
"The president is certainly going to listen to any ideas," he said.
"He will also go to Capitol Hill the beginning of next week to talk to Republican caucuses and solicit their input and their ideas."
Why is the president attacking private citizens rather than working with politicians to get the economy back on it's feet?
Discuss.
He already fixed the economy. See the gun sales? After the EPA/autos announcement, watch V8s, pickups and so on get a shitload of sales as the thing goes into effect...
Also, I can see law firms licking their fingers for high profile terrorist cases right now...

Fuck it I'll bite. I believe him asking people to work with him rather than look to Limbaugh IS part of him trying to get the economy back on its feet. I think he's trying to do what he thinks is best for the economy and will help, If he's working with people who listen to and follow a talk radio host who unabashedly claims he actually prays for the country to fail under this president I don't think both parties would be interested in success.

Why should republicans with like views to Limbaugh HAVE to work with him? The democrats wouldn't work with republicans on a 825 billion dollar tax cut plan, they're not supposed to. The reason there are two parties is because they have different ideals. Giving up ideals for political expediency doesn't solve a thing.

If only you'd pull your head out of your ass and actually listen to what Rush said, instead of listening to the MSNBC's take on it, maybe you'd see how the whole attack pans out.
Rush said he hopes the country does well under Obama, but he hopes that Obama fails in his plan of instating all of his socialist ideologies, because he (Rush) doesn't want to see the country headed that direction. I don't blame him.
But on the other hand, if the messiah can do no wrong in your book, by all means, get the knee pads out...

Werd.. You never hear democrats talking about 'reaching across the isle'. If anything, republicans need to stop doing just that, stand for what they used to believe in.

Well they have to work with him because he was voted in by a clear majority of Americans, but that doesn't mean they have to do everything he says. My point is there is a such a backlash against him that some people have vocalized that they would rather see the country fail than him succeed. If republicans believe spending willy-nilly will hurt the United States by all means fight it, but I don't believe they should fight something because they think it would help the United States. That is how I interpreted the parts of Obama's words you posted.

So during Bush's time, when gas was expensive and Bush and all the republicans tried to lift the ban on drilling, why didn't the democrats have to work with the republicans/Bush?
