Closer to the all new U.S.S.A or.....

a stupid decision? He had all his paperwork in order, had been through several other airports before this, and was completely within the law as far as i can tell.

LOS ANGELES - The man arrested at Los Angeles International Airport with a trunk full of guns and nearly 1,000 rounds of ammunition said Saturday that he is a law-abiding weapons enthusiast who had no idea he might be breaking the law.

A day after he was arrested for suspicion of felony transportation of an assault rifle, Phillip Dominguez said he's confident he'll be exonerated.

"I'm a law-abiding, taxpaying gun enthusiast. I have no felonies — up until now," Dominguez said.

Airport police saw it a little differently.

"In the post-Sept. 11 (2001) environment, it is well-known by weapon owners that airports and weapons simply do not mix," said Los Angeles Airport Police Chief George Centeno.

"He just made a very bad decision, and should not have been carrying those weapons," airport police Sgt. Jim Holcomb said on Friday. A call to an airport police spokesman seeking further comment Saturday was not immediately returned.

Dominguez, 47, of Orange, said he went to the Los Angeles airport to pick up a friend from Baltimore on Friday. They intended to go target shooting at an outdoor range in San Bernardino County.

As Dominguez entered the airport's ring road, his truck was pulled over for inspection. Dominguez says he knew police would want to look inside the locked cover of the truck bed so he got out, opened it and declared that he had firearms there.

Dominguez said he had 16 pistols, including an 1858 black-powder Army revolver. He also had five rifles — one of them an assault-style rifle — and nearly 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

Dominguez said he didn't think he was breaking any laws since all the weapons and ammunition were in separate, locked boxes. At least half a dozen times since Thanksgiving, Dominguez said he made similar stops at the airport carrying his guns and never saw a police checkpoint.

He showed officials the paperwork proving the assault rifle was registered and gave them the keys and combinations of all the lockboxes, he said.

Dominguez said he was handcuffed, taken to a jail, and held for six hours before he was booked. He was released after his family posted $50,000 bail. But his guns and his truck were confiscated.

He faces a Feb. 6 arraignment.

Dominguez, who owns a construction company — as well as about 80 guns — says he doesn't blame airport authorities for stopping his truck for inspection. But he believes security should be looking for ex-felons and bank robbers. And he intends to fight.

"I'm contacting their worst nightmare — an attorney," he said.

Dominguez' lawyer, Bruce Colodny, said it's true that carrying weapons at airports is a sensitive subject but "there's nothing sinister about this. Despite the fact they're controversial, assault weapons continue to be lawfully possessed."

You show up at an airport with enough hardware to start a coup. What the hell do you think is going to happen?

He has two major things against him...
        1. He's in the liberal capitol of the world.
        2. One of the fire arms was an assault rifle which is as taboo as saying "pit bull" while talking about dogs.

More government intrusion into the life of a law abiding private citizen. However it was not the smartest move on his part to bring all those weapons, legally or not near an airport in a post 9/11 world. He could have had his buddy take a cab and meet him somewhere off airport grounds.

Ideally nothing if they were merely being transported in his vehicle. Had he started unloading them all from his truck I could maybe see him asking for trouble, but even then he isn't necessarily breaking any laws if they are cased and unloaded (which the article implies). What if the guy was taking a flight and wanted to check the guns into luggage? There's nothing wrong with that as long as he follows the proper steps.

Just goes to reinforce why you should NEVER consent to a search under any circumstance...

I don't think I'd have done what this guy did, but, I don't think he broke any laws either. If you were going to ban guns in and around airports, you should have to post very large signs stating "No guns allowed." It also seems that the guy was very lawful while transporting thes fire arms by having them all in locked cases seperate from the ammunition.
I think the authorities are over reacted.

--On a side note-- The Air Force has some funny stipulations about what you can and can't have on you while flying with them in Iraq. I thought it was funny as hell they wouldn't let me carry a knife with a blade more than 3", but they had no issue with me having my M16 and 270 rounds.

They can't legally do that... it violates the constitution. I'm sure obama will change that for us though. Then we'll be safe

What's to stop the violation of the right given to us by our second amendment in a case like I suggested considering they do it in so many places already? Haven't you seen the signs saying "__________ bans guns on these premisis?"

All the store can do is request that a person in violation leave the premisis. If said person refuses, and the cops are called, it's a $25 fine and not considered a crime. It's no worse than trespassing. Not that anyone in their right mind would refuse to leave and deal with the cops though. With any private business though, they can refuse to serve a person for any reason, so it's really nothing more than they could do before. (this refers to MN state law, others may vary)

"all areas of airports" can't be legally posted because the laws are written so that is not possible. parking lots for example can't be posted (well, enforced anyway).

He was not IN a building. He was in his vehicle. These guns were not accessible not in his passenger compartment. They were in transit. This is a bad move.

Yay, let's ban all guns, works for England! Pretty soon we can have safety police that stop us for walking too fast..... Unfortunately this guy is going to get fucked, and hard, by 'zero tolerance'. This will be a spendy court case for him that I don't see he'll be able to win with your average lawyer. Unless someone like the NRA steps up and helps this man, he will end up a martyr.
