An 11 year veteran of the Hastings police department is charged with possession of child pornography and sexual exploitation of a child. Anthony Miller was arrested Tuesday in his New Richmond, Wisconsin home. While in police custody, Miller admitted to downloading, possessing, trading and distributing child pornography for the past 2 years. He told authorities he used his personal laptop while on duty as a Hastings Officer to obtain wireless internet access via unencrypted wireless signals from random locations throughout the Hastings area. Miller also says he participated in an online file sharing program where he would chat with other individuals involved in possessing child pornography and shared photos with them. Detectives said the children ranged in age from 9 to 15. Miller was booked and has been released on bail.
Neighbors say they're "shocked" to learn of the allegations against Miller. "They're a beautiful family, his kids are wonderful," said Todd Nielsen, Miller's neighbors. He continued: "We just hope nothing but the best for them, and they're able to work through whatever it is they're going through." Hastings Police Chief Mike McMenomy also commented on the department's concern over Miller's arrest, saying: "We're shocked and disappointed after learning of the conduct and behavior of this officer."
