    Medal of Honor denied

WTF??? I remember reading about this guy a while back, he dropped himself on a grenade so his buddies could get out (he had the choice of jumping out but his buddies wouldn't have had the time to get out).

Hero Marine Won't Get Medal of Honor By CHELSEA J. CARTER, AP
posted: 4 HOURS 51 MINUTES AGOcomments: 76filed under: Iraq NewsPrintShareText SizeAAASAN DIEGO (Sept. 18) - A Marine sergeant singled out by President Bush for throwing his body on a grenade to save his comrades in Iraq will receive the prestigious Navy Cross rather than the nation's highest military award, military officials said.
The family of Sgt. Rafael Peralta, who was posthumously nominated for the nation's highest military honor, told the North County Times of Escondido, Calif., they were disappointed he was not receiving the Medal of Honor.

"I don't understand why if the president has been talking about him," his mother, Rosa Peralta, told the newspaper, which was the first to report the bestowing of the Navy Cross.
Rosa Peralta said she was informed during a meeting with Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Richard Natonski that a committee could not agree on awarding the Medal of Honor to her son, who Marine Corps officials say was first wounded by friendly fire. She said the general mentioned the friendly fire aspect as part of her son's death during the discussion.
Marine Corps spokesman Mike Alvarez confirmed the meeting, saying only that it was a personal briefing between Natonski and Rosa Peralta to inform her that the secretary of the Navy would award the Navy Cross posthumously for extraordinary heroism.
The Navy Cross is the second highest honor for combat heroism a Marine can receive.
The secretary of the Navy's public affairs office in Washington, D.C., did not immediately return an after-hours telephone call Wednesday seeking comment.

In other news, the medal of honor is going to be awarded to a soldier who had the bravery to speak out against this war and denounce President Bush.

I don't have a problem with this. Just because Bush was talking about it does not mean it meets the committee's criteria for the award. The committee obviously thought it was not worthy of the Medal of Honor and instead awarded the Navy Cross. No matter what the award, the fact he did what he did was an incredible act of bravery.

Wow, this really wasn't intended to be a political post, just outrage at the event.

I assume in your case the person is not getting it based on his opinion but probably more for his actions but you seem to leave that out because that's not the part that helps your point?

I don't give a damn about Bush's opinion (if you haven't gotten that) just can't believe they deny it to someone who litteraly gave his life in a rather gruesome way to save his fellow soldiers.

Here are the three BASIC requirements that need to be met before someone is considered for the MOH.

On July 25,1963 Congress established a set of guidelines under which the Medal of Honor could be awarded:
            a.) while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States;
b.) while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or,
c.) while serving with friendly forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.
            .
            .
            .

The Medal of Honor, established by joint resolution of Congress, July 12, 1862, (amended by Act of July 9, 1918, and Act of July 25, 1963) is awarded in the name of Congress to a person, who, while a member of the armed forces, distinguishes himself or herself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against any enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

The deed must have been one of personal bravery or self-sacrifice, an action that conspicuously distinguished the individual above his comrades. Incontestable proof of the performance of service is exacted and the recommendation for award of this decoration is considered on the standard of extraordinary merit. Eligibility is limited to members of the armed forces of the United States in active military service.

He gave his life. Thats above and beyond. but because this is "our" war. I dont think he can recive it per the guidelines...

              Which sucks.

According to the original article he met all the listed criteria, I know I don't know all the things related to this, just doesn't seem to make any sense

And again, MY point (if you haven't gotten that ) is that it is NOT up to the president to decide. It is up to a committee. THEY decided he was not worthy of it and awarded a lesser medal. I doubt he said to himself, "Oh gee, looky there. A grenade! I'm gonna jump on it in hope of being awarded the MOH!!" What he did was an incredible act of bravery not matter what award.
