    So that's how it works.

    Taken verbatim from another forum.

A Japanese company (Toyota) and an American company (Ford) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management
team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action. Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing.

Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion. They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents, and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager. They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First Program,' with meetings, dinners, and free pens for the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes, and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices and bonuses.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated a second time, the American management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe,
sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses and the next year's racing team was out-sourced to India.

    Sadly, the end.

But think about this and see what it tells you:

Ford has spent the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the U.S., claiming they can't make money paying American wages.

Toyota, on the other hand, has spent the last thirty years building more than a dozen plants inside the U.S.

Now for the last quarter's financial results:

TOYOTA makes 4 billion in profits while Ford racked up 9 billion in losses. Which leaves the Ford folks still scratching their heads.

Well, Toyota doesn't pay comparable pay or benefits to a Ford employee. Plus, Ford is paying through the nose for UAW retirement benefits. Same goes for GM.

Plus, look where Toyota factories are located. Poorest part of the country where people are willing to work for less. Definitely not UAW country.

/\ thank god someone can see through the thick woody forest of bullshit in that little joke. Guess how many Toyota employees get paid $30 an hour to pop in plastic panels, can show up to work drunk an hour late, punch their boss in the face and get paid leave while they attend complimentary alcohol rehab and anger management classes only to get moved laterally within the company so they can continue their employment without the "hassle" of their asshole boss.

              NOT A DAMN ONE!

They still get good pay and benefits - it is after all an assembly line for the worlds richest car manufacturer. But it does not compare to the bullshit Ford and GM have to deal with from the UAW.

The UAW is one of the most lazy ass-fucked unions in the country.
Dear Government, eventually the people with money will tell you to fuck off, and stop paying for those that don't work

Sure they dug their own graves - they made relatively crappy cars that were no cheaper to buy than their less crapy competitor's, consequently sold fewer and were basically forced to spend twice as much in "overhead". All the way down to part suppliers. For some reason, 16 year old American girls don't want to work 18 hour days putting electronics together for $20 a week.

However, the joke above implies that American engineers are ignorant and technologically inferior. It also implies that Japanese manufacturers DO NOT pay their executives gross amounts of money that could be used for capital.

                        Wrong

The person who wrote that joke is a tard, has no idea what they are writing about and certainly drives a Honda with cut coils a fartcan and parkbench spoiler.

The story is poking fun at management at american car makers and imo has nothing to due with the UAW or union works. It could be worse for Ford/GM they could be in Chrysler's position.

                            yup...

In the end, I'd rather have my brakes bolted on by someone making 30 bucks an hour, not a disgruntled walmart employee.

While it's a great business model for toyota, minimizing costs; it also drives down the US standard of living... the more cars they sell, the less us manufacturers sell, the more $30 dollar an hour workers lose their job and are replaced with $8/hr workers (in toyota's factories).

What gets me even more is getting advice from people who have absofuckinglutely no clue about cars when I say I'm car shopping... girl from work told me I should buy a Yaris... she was serious too...

Yea but would you rather someone at a lower wage in a poorer economy did it or someone in Canada or overseas did it while the $30 an hour guy can reminisce about the good old days of making $30 an hour before getting laid off.

Also, you touch on quality but lets face it Toyota has done just fine in that area. Every vehicle I've owned has been american brand (half of them built in Canada) but you have to give credit where credit is due.

The joke has some valid points, I've studied some of the Lean Project Methodologies utilized by companies such as Sony and Toyota and they are a lot more efficient then the methodologies currently being used by a lot of US companies and government. Their basic point is to get straight to business and cut out the waist.
