Home theater nerds, does all the different audio formats make your head hurt?

Trying to learn the difference between all the audio codecs available now, and how they match up with receivers, hd-dvd/bluray, and other devices is just mind-numbing.

I understand most of that because I end up doing a lot encoding of video in various formats, especially .mkv and other multi track media files. I don't see why anyone would need to know more than the format name, and if their device supports it since todays formats are so good you couldn't hear the difference and your amplifier and speakers are probably the limitation,

Not entirely true. Although DD and DTS are extremely hard to tell apart, the difference between DD / DTS and DD True HD / DTS HD MA is night and day. It is even easy to tell uncompressed LPCM from DD / DTS.

PM ACR. He is probably the most knowledgeable.

He is always down for helping too. He once came and helped me swap a neon motor in one day.

Hands down the two best audio codecs are Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. Both do lossless encoding of up to 8 discrete channels of audio on a BD.
