In a dive it's much much faster....I think you can get around 2220mph in a dive without any special equipment. Also, the higher the altitude the faster you can go.

I remember hearing an interview with him where he said at that height there was no wind at all, and for a while it didn't even feel like he was moving, just floating since he was so far from everything and there wasn't much atmosphere to give him a physical sensation of falling.
