    fish gurus

    after adding all of my new fish I am having troubles keeping the ammonia down. I have 10 large (3-8inch) fish in a 45 gallon hex tank with a hot magnum charcoal canister pump. I change the charcoal every month and clean the gravel at the same time.

    what I want to know is how much filter is to much? I have live plants and I would like to keep them that way.

    today I hooked the under gravel filter up with ammonia filters. I am just curious if it is to much filtration.

    let me know thanks Jon.

            rice is cheap like $1 a bag, so all of the proceeds from selling the tank will be drinking money

                For one thing that sounds like too many fish for that sized tank. As far as filtration I dont really think there is such a thing as too much. However you shouldn't change your filters and clean your tank at the same time. They contain benifical bacteria that also helps keep your water clear and at the correct levels. Your filters should have some type of bio sponge to also contain this bacteria, these you never change just leave them in. That is why people talk so high of the bio wheel filters, they are doing the same thing.

                I honestly have never really checked my water for the chemical content, and never really had problems and my filter is only rated for a 60g and its on a 75g. High ammonia, is due to excessive fish waste, food not eaten and rotting on the bottom, as well as dying plants. Also the water you add to the tank could have high numbers, make sure you use some type of water treatment or let the water sit in a bucket for a while before dumping into the tank, also do you have a heater in your tank, if so what is the tempature, the higher the temp the less ammonia it cal tolerate.

                ah and post some pics of the said tank.... what all do you have for fish?

                    the main filter is a marineland magnum bio canister filter.
                    I also have under gravel filtration with ammonia inserts.

                        throw that under gravel shit away, thats your fucking problem, its like a shit disposal that never flushes it down the drain, did someone tell you to use that?

                              Have you ever used a vacumn on your gravel? Used to vac my gravel at least twice a year when I had the time to play with the fishiees.
