It's not just by having them around you will automatically be fat. The way I see it is this: friends/family that you associate with on a regular basis you act like them. So you go out to eat, have some beers, watch the game--whether football, baseball, hockey, etc.--and you start to have the same habits. Eat and watch tv and don't excercise.
Just look around the next time you are at Walmart and you'll see that a majority of the time if a man is overweight his lady is too. It's not in all cases but most of the time.
Friends and family have influence and that is what I think the article and study is trying to get at.
