What the hell is that smell!

So while in the shower I noticed a change in the lights and what sounded like a pop.

As I get out of the shower I smell something funky. I notice the lights still on, but dim..

    wait for it...

Go over the the "fuse box" for the house and its coming from there forsure.

Open up the cover to discover this...

And while I try to take the cooked and very warm even after 15 mins, yet still not blown fuse out.....

    this happens..

Good thing I dont have any 9 volt batteries for the smoke detector.

Anyone want to toss out suggestions?
I was planning on having the house "updated" just not at the moment. Once I get some other stuff paid for I was going to have it all rewired. I really cant afford to pay to have this house rewired right now.

So anyways, im rocking one less main fuse, and the lights in the house are very dim, however I need some power for the fridge and one fan would be nice. I have unplugged the TV, amps, and reciever along with anything else I dont need. Last thing I want is to wake up to a burning down house.

Can I just get a new fuse and main holder for it? Im thinking it went out because I had the theater system on, dryer, ac, 2 cieling fans, one floor fan, and the lights in the living room, kitchen, and bathroom on
I dont recall ever having all this stuff on at the same time before.

This can all be avoided if you stop making toast in the bathtub.

You should be able to get replacement parts to fix what you have but I would update ASAP.

I would also get new batteries for your smoke detectors and possibly buy another detector to have right by the fuse box.

Yes he can install a new box but that would come with the upgrading step and he would probably need to pull permits and such so it's on the up and up.

Probably not legally. You need to find some one to do it on the side, or do it yourself. I can't really tell unless I looked at the whole setup though.

I am confused though, did the fuse not blow? With that damage it looks like it should of blown right away and I would give a call to the fuse company and complain.

And you say your lights are still dim?

If your lights are still dim, I'd be a little concerned about my other appliances. Such as things that have a electric motor. I can see you burning up/overheating a few other things running on such a low electrical supply.

Get it fixed now or you'll be replacing more than you expected

I agree, if your lights are all dim then something is still sucking juice. Just not enough to blow the fuse I would guess.

probably should have done the electrical before the Sheetrock job

I was thinking that it was a halfway step between doing nothing and paying someone to redo your elec system. It would buy some time, and if your afraid of wiring stuff hot you could always have the power company come out and shut you off for an hour.

Well, it depends how old the wiring is. It isn't typical that you can update one thing without being required to update other things because of the electric code, which a contractor must follow to be legal.
