    Wireless-N

Anyone heard of it? In the CC ad, it states 4X the range and 12x the speed of wireless-G(which I have now).

I could use more range as the router is at one end of the house.

I wouldn't buy N spec till the spec is actually written. And I don't think it had been yet.

Besides, people are always promising extra performance from simple bolt-ons! 100 HP from an intake manifold, 45 HP from an x-pipe...

yep stay away until it is actually a standard, right now anything you buy will be proprietary to that manufacturer (so you will have to run all of the same manufacturer equipment/model) and it wont work as good as the stuff that will be standardized. right now they are talking about 108mb/s but there is talk of 600mb once it is ratified...

802.11a is still the shiznit tho

Aha, I setup networks for living...yawn. The only advantage draft-N has is some come with gigabit ethernet(not wireless) if you play games and do a lot of file sharing it would go a lot faster that way, but for distance...meh. The best router you can find at bestbuy or cc is a netgear rangemax router. it has 11 antennas internally and operates in super-g 108mbps. Go with netgear or buffalo and stay away from linksys. keep in mind the more you spend it does not make your internet faster, even a g router operates at 54mbps and your internet is way below that usually around 1-5mbps

              Good information.

I want more range. The speed is fine as is.

why would gig ethernet on an ap make any difference what so ever to a home user???! the half duplex nature of wireless and the actual throughput it has from client to ap would make gig on the wired side absolutely worthless! even at 100mb you arent even getting close to maxing out the throughput on the ethernet side. the only thing 802.11n is really does over the other 802.11 specs is that it is fixing multipath in the signal from the antennas by utilizing multiple antennas to triangulate clients and create a temporary point to point connection rather than flood the area with weaker signal. Regardless of its increased transfer rate things you have to keep in mind is for one you are still riding the horrendous 2.4ghz spectrum with only 3 usable channels that is incredibly congested, and 2 just like how g is crippled by backwards compatibility to b in its backoff algorithms n is not going to be any better.

you all can keep playing around with that stuff, i'll stick with my enterprise 802.11a equipment and not worry about neighbors, microwaves, etc....

If you have gigabit capable cards you will recieve and send files/packets etc faster via ethernet.

1Gb for home use except for gaming is just like the 4Gb and 10Gb in the fibre channel world. It is all a marketing game right now and it is mainly there to say damn do we have some fast hardware and 85% of the people out there have a single computer or maybe two at their house and they are only hooked up to the internet so having 1Gb for their network speed does nothing for them.

Ray, throw in another access point closer to the other side of your house. I have my wireless router upstairs and a wireless access point downstairs. The computer transitions seamlessly between the two and I get excellent range.
