    Gas

    Since we import 15% of the gas we are using.......... few questions.

    1) How many gas power vehicles are in use in the US?

    2) What is the overall average MPG for all vehicles in use?

    3) To reduce our gas usage by 15% in the US, what would our overall
    MPG have to be?

    I know there are some smart guys here with the answers.

      Incorrect assertion/assumption/inference.
      1. As the number of vehicles is NOT constant (grows);
      2. As the MPG average is a moving figure;
      3. As driving habits dictate actual mileage;
      4. As driving decisions - how often, where to go, how far - determine usage;
      5. As climate/season affect gas mileage...

      Your question can not be solved as posed. It's not average fuel mileage that is the problem, but fuel consumption relative to supply.

          Bunch of hard asses here.

          It may be simplistic, but there are a lot of studies of moving targets. You just pick a point in time.

            To reduce consumption by 15%, we will need to use 15% less fuel.

              i hear numbers across the board (from 10% to 80%) for net oil imports. the most reliable, albeit dated, information i've found is http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/25opec/sld002.htm

              is there something i'm missing here? where did you get the 15% figure?

                He's talking about importing refined gasoline, not crude to be refined here. LIke Fernarerie, I was going to be a smart ass and say use 15% less. The problem here is that by asking the question as it was presented makes the issue appear to be a simple, direct 1-1 answer. It is not. The only direct answer, point in time as of today, is use 15% less. Seriously. How you get to 15% less is another matter. As rates of use climb and raw usage climbs, this is not answerable as presented. That's all.

                      i would wager the average mpg of cars and light trucks is 25mpg.

                      how you reduce gas use by 15%, i have no idea. if gas prices went to $10 a gallon that would probably reduce gas use by 15% and that's the only 'solution' i see to your question.

                      my new work is going to be 3.6 miles from home, compared to 18.5 miles, so that is very good

                          I don't drive around (cruise) anymore, I cancelled a memorial day vacation, I ride bike to work on nice days. I have reduced my consumption by 15 percent. I also look better, feel better, and am in better shape than I was before. But I work out a few times a week besides. I have made sacrifices, now if only others could do the same.............

                            Buy a used geo metro, escort, ford aspire/festiva, etc.

                            You'll use half of what you were using.
