Anybody know how to look up MN statuts??

Driving the pro street car into work this morn. Ran out of gas, damnit!! State trooper pulls up and proceeds to try to nail me with anything he can. He looks at the collector plates and says you can't drive this to work. It can only be driven to car shows. I said no I think it just cannot be licensed as your regular driver. He says nothing. Then he looks at my BRAND new hoosier quick time pros and says they are also illegal. No tread. I told him that they have dot #'s and he argues there is not tread. I say the minimum is like 3/32 and these have like 7/32. He says nothing. Then I get the gas in and start it. He looks under and says my exhaust is illegal. He says that it has to blend in with the normal sound of the car. He says it is too loud. WHich it really ain't that loud. Then he also says it has to exit the rear of the car where it come factory. It has to exit behind the passenger compartmen which he says is the front of the trunk. He was not going to hear me argue that one. He just HHAAAADDD to get me on something. Is there a place I can look this stuff up and print it out and keep it in the car in case this happens again?

Vehicles registered in any of the collector classes are restricted to operation solely as a collector item. These vehicles cannot be used for general transportation purposes.

        Kinda sucks huh!

Yea, it sucks. That to me is pretty grey. This is what I found. It just says that you have to have another registered vehicle and that the collector one cannot be used for general transportation.

            Sec. 3. Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 168.10,
subdivision 1c, is amended to read:
Subd. 1c. [COLLECTOR'S VEHICLE, COLLECTOR LICENSE.] Any
motor vehicle, including any truck, that is at least 20 model
years old and manufactured after 1935, or any motor vehicle of a
defunct make defined as any car or truck originally licensed as
a separate identifiable make as designated by the division of
motor vehicles, and owned and operated solely as a collector's
vehicle, shall be listed for taxation and registration as
follows: An affidavit shall be executed stating the name and
address of the person from whom purchased and of the new owner,
the make of the motor vehicle, year and number of the model, the
manufacturer's identification number and that the vehicle is
owned and operated solely as a collector's item and not for
general transportation purposes. The owner must also prove that
the owner also has one or more vehicles with regular license
plates. If the registrar is satisfied that the affidavit is
true and correct and the owner pays a $25 tax, the registrar
shall list the vehicle for taxation and registration and shall
issue a single number plates plate.

That's exactly why I don't have collector plates. In Wisconsin, the only restriction is that you can't drive the car in January.

That is the perfect way to run it.

That is why you are 'going for a drive after work' or 'going to the exhaust shop', etc.

Actually, that one is wrong. It has to clear the profile of the passanger cabin, not out the back. There are many cars that kick it out the side (like mine). It's 50 state legal. Sounds like he got stuck profiling, and had his butt handed to him with a LEGAL car.

He actually eventually let me go before ticketing me so I don't have to fight it. But boy he was sure trying hard. Passenger cabin. That is another one of those "grey" areas. I have been finding some of these statutes.

Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order
which blends the exhaust noise into the overall vehicle noise and is in constant operation to
prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass, or similar
device upon a motor vehicle on a street or highway. The exhaust system shall not emit or produce
a sharp popping or crackling sound. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with such
parts and equipment so arranged and kept in such state of repair as to prevent carbon monoxide
gas from entering the interior of the vehicle.

So in other words, I think it would be his "opinion" against mine. And I highly doubt that the judge would listen to me over somebody in that position.
