My CD drive will not recognize any DVD's or CD's. I put them in, the drive spins them up, but the E: drive remains empty. I've tried rebooting my driver, updating my driver, etc. Any other ideas?

A cd drive will eject without the ide cable plugged in, all it needs in order to do that is power. The IDE cable is worth checking considering it's free, but I suspect you'll be buying a new drive.Originally posted by SmithEvo View Postits a sony vaio laptop. I would assume the drives for laptops are a bit more expensive
I dont know what an IDE cable is, but since the computer will eject the cd drive, I would guess it's plugged in.

sometimes my laptop CD wont recognise DVDs...
Usually if i open or close it a couple times or push the drive in a little tighter to seat it better against the prongs in the back of the drive where it connects to the main board it will start working.
Then again, my laptop is held together with duct tape, wood screws and super glue... I also turn it on with a paper clip :\

Not sure what the sony vio's drive looks like, if it's like ibm/lenovo's you should be able to either flip a switch or press a button and eject the entire drive easily. If you can do that reseat it and try again unlikelybut might as well try. If it is that easy to remove the drive it will probably be cheaper to replace it as well.

It is a DVD writerOriginally posted by Video_Master View Postthere is no IDE cable cause it is a laptop. Does sound like the drive went south though. I would check out e-bay for a new drive and this time you could purchase a DVD writer for it.
Oh well, time to start searching ebay i guess.

Well he didn't specify it was a laptop on his first post!Originally posted by Video_Master View Postthere is no IDE cable cause it is a laptop. Does sound like the drive went south though. I would check out e-bay for a new drive and this time you could purchase a DVD writer for it.
E-bay isn't a bad idea. Just be sure you don't get another bad drive off of there!Originally posted by NickThe choice is easy.
