The White House’s draft plan, leaked last week, calls for a new “Z” visa that would allow illegal immigrant workers to apply for three-year work permits. They would be renewable indefinitely, but would cost $3,500 each time.

To get a permit and become legal permanent residents, illegal immigrants would have to return to their home country, apply at a U.S. embassy or consulate to re-enter legally and pay a $10,000 fine.

The proposal has been sharply criticized by Hispanic advocacy groups, Democrats, the Roman Catholic Church and unions that have many immigrants in their ranks. They argue the cost of work permits and the green card application — which could total more than $20,000 — are prohibitive for low-wage earners.

I find it funny (and maddening at the same time) that they're complaining about yet one more way to come here legally... I'm wondering if these fines cover all of the charges that the US government pays for an illegal in terms of medical benefits, jail, deportation costs, etc...

The US Government has not money itself. It taxes the citizens to get the funds. This is a cost to the TAX PAYER only! Dang them...

if they do, the illegals wont follow it, if they don't, well it's kinda pointless anyway. what i'm wondering is what are the repercussions on who gets caught not following it...

I like it though, they always pride themselves that they're hard workers, well, prove it. only thing i'd probably change about it is make it a federal income tax instead of a 'fine'. that way it would be easier to pass along/justify... in europe, lots of countried have increased taxes for foreign workers, don't see why we couldn't adopt the same thing.

Never, ever do this. It legitimizes the "work" argument. Oh, they're good workers, hard workers... They are law breakers first. Once that is established, anything that follows is moot.

Agreed. I got a bunch of them at my job. I wish they werent there. They all wear "USA" , or "Harley Davidson" or Airforce, abercombie etc.... It shows you the true nature of the business I work for. Definately bad ethics.

These clowns are always complaining that I get away with things they dont. I think they have alot of nerve considering they sneaked into our country and somehow got past thier illegal status.
