Ever heard of Comdisco? I developed trading floor recovery for them and deployed it worldwide. Being familiar with in house DR maybe you have heard of them.Originally posted by Video_Master
The main thing I am doing right now is totally re-designing the SAN environment. I have already upgraded our DR site to the new Cisco MDS 9000 Series SAN switches. I have production to do next starting in the beginning of March. Exchange and Active Directory are one of my best skills. I would say SAN is second. and then the list for third is tied between lots and lots of other MS stuff.
Wow.. I meant more along the lines of your customer base. Your website says small business - I dont know about wells fargo being small biz.

yup, I have heard of them. That is cool. I deal with mainly small and medium business. I have a few clients, not many. Mainly Law firms, Accounting firms, and Chiropractors. I do all their computer stuff, well I should say my buddies that do work for me, I don't have alot of time to do it myself anymore. I also do contractor placement. I currently have 2 people out on contract and they will be getting hired on in 1 to 2 months. I make $4 an hour on each person that I contract out. That is after all the taxes and SS and all that other crap. UCS Networks, Inc. is small and I want to grow it over time. I would eventually like to just work that full time.Originally posted by red50

Not to put a negative spin on this Video but Wells Fargo scares the shit out of me. Just imagine if they screw up - FDIC cant even cover a small percentage of losses. Not to mention the 3 billion person customer base they have.
Im sure Im overlooking all their other "services" that would suffer as well. That company could put this country into chaos.
I dont even want to imagine Wells Fargo in DR mode. Holly shit I will be in Tahiti if I were you in that event.
This is why I left big business.
Dont take this the wrong way this is just my opinion, nothing against you - you are just earning a living.

Well if you ever cant make it to one of them, let me know, there may be a Pepsi machine in it for you. I would be happy to work on a contract basis if you need anyone to help out for a while.Originally posted by Video_Master

I cant do it permanantly but in a pinch -let me know.
I know how it is trying to make money off employees - damn near impossible.

Remember that Wells is many manhy small business units so not everything would be in DR mode at the same time. Our division which is Institutional Trust has offices Here and Tempe. Our Main Data Center is here and the DR is in Roseville for another 3 months then is getting moved to Tempe. ( I can't wait to go there to install it.) But there are data centers all over the country that Wells has their equipment in so there is no need to worry unless the entire country is under attack. With the Cisco equipment that I am implementing I am bringing in FCIP for REAL TIME data replication. We will be running dual OC48's to our DR site just for the data replication from the SANS. All of our servers run from the SANs booting off of it also.
I used to work for Target before this and remember the black out that happened this last summer? Well that only took out our store and the data centers that we had on that part of the country. We were still all operational with the DR sites for those data centers.
It all comes down to where is everything and how much money are you willing to spend to make a exact copy of production.

I understand but what about power grids? Do you use dual providers for each OC48's
What about voice stuff?
Backup Turbine Generators? Is this their answer?
If so where are those located?
Its all about the people too. How vested in the "human factor" are you.Last edited by Guest; 02-11-2004, 12:43 AM.

yes we use dual providers for the data lines. I'm not sure about the voice lines as that is handled by another department. I only deal with the data center Infrastructure so servers, san, switches, power and so on.
Tempe is a whole different power grid then Minnesota so that takes care of that problem, anyways we have diesel generators for the Data Centers that have enough fuel for 2 days. That is more then enough time to get things switched for what we need to do. We perform what are called BCP events 4 times a year, or once per quarter. We simulate a disaster and everything moves to the DR site. Nothing has failed yet.

no dark fiber yet.
not sure what the diesel stuff is. I designed it and told them to buy it and they did.
before the move our area is screwed and that is why they are moving. This was my decision to move it as they were stupid before.
we are mainly 90% laptops and also have alot of Term Services. Our trading stuff is 3270 which is already replicated to Tempe. They use Compaq equpiment. for servers we buy 3 for every 1 needed. they get a Test/Dev machine, a Production Machine, and a DR machine.
