Water Softeners ?

I'm about to run out and get water softener #4 in 19 years of living in this house. Has anyone else had to replace theirs? Do they wear out? I thought a good water softener should last 20 years.

Maybe I should just lease one from Culligan.

If you live in minneapolis, richfield, columbia heights or bloomington you do not need a water softner. The city water is pre softened, and anything more you might as well be drinking salt water.

We live in Maple Grove and the waters pretty hard. If you drink 3 quarts of water, it's like eating a slice of bread for the potassium in the water.

*shrug* dunno then. if Softners dont wear out I'm pretty sure over time they get mineral build up on them. You want to see an example of how bad, just open up any ole pipe in your house that has been there for about 30 years. You will notice a hard crusty material on the inside of it that clogs up about 90% of the pipe. I imagine that happens in softners. Fuck the first time i saw a water main opened up i thought it was a sewer pipe. Anyhow i know jack squat about home softners. Just know that in minneapolis the water is sent out of the plant pre-treated. Some people still dont like it but i've never had a problem with.

Hmm, our first softener lasted 17 years, but we did replace the beads in there after 10. The timer finally died and that was replaced a couple of years ago.

What kind of softener are you using?

I just rent a water softener from Ecowater, $13.85 a month.

I think lime buildup will wreck a water heater over time, i think. Im not sure if they will ruin a softener.

What a ripoff. You should just buy one for about $500. In the long run it will be cheaper.

Ray, you are supposed to add salt to get them to work. If the run low or empty, they won't work.

The water in Ripley is too pure to need a water softener.

Seems like 4 softeners in 20 years is a bit much though, but I don't know much about them either. If I were you, I'd see if a cause to their early demise can be determined.

Well, good news. Have soft water again. Took it apart, cleaned it, loaded it with water softerner cleaner and salt.

Also cleaned out the bathroom sink drain and that flows like crazy again. Damn house maintenance.

Pshh, go to Sears. That's where we got ours, runs like a champ, and they're cheap as hell. The rent-a-softeners are a complete screwjob.
