    Wireless internet

I have a desktop computer, a laptop and an Xbox. Id like to join them all together without a bunch of wires on the net. What can I use to do this on the cheap? I also want it to be reasonably secure.

I think Im going to get the Linsys wireless router. I plan to keep the Xbox fed off the modem and feed the desktop using a wireless card. My laptop already has a wireless card. Does this idea make sense?

I have a Linksys G Broadband Wireless Router. Works great. Have 2 desktops plugged into it and 3 notebooks accessing wireless. Linksys is Cisco, so you know it's pretty good. They have faster modems then the G also.

You mean routers? I wouldn't buy a draft N router or equipment yet, I have been reading alot of user reviews on them, and they all say the same thing, you get signal thats there one sec and gone the next, and where you should have signal, you have none.

That being said, if the draft N spec changes, you are stuck with not so spec N equip, also, there is no 100% guarantee with a firmware upgrade that you will be able to use it as the final N spec.

I'd take that linksys stuff, as long as its all got the speed booster tech it should do more then what the average person needs.

Newegg also has some buffalo routers that get rave reviews.

Either way, I am running cables all over until the N spec is finalized.

Yep, I misspoke. Meant router. Unless your a gamer, I don't think it makes much difference. I have VH1 vids going all the time and don't notice any slowdown.

Being a gamer has nothing to do with it if you mean internet gamer. 802.11b is 11mbps which is faster then 99% of the internet connections out there. Yes Linksys is OWNED by Cisco, but they they are still the same product as they were when they were not owned by them.

I'm getting 2.7mbps on Comcast, so it's quite speedy, but expensive.

This is true, Cisco is dominating the coporate market with their praperitory products, rounting protocols and convient software and wanted a taste in the residential market. They bought Linksys to do that, but that doesn't mean they are Cisco, but it does mean that they are good enough to have the Cisco logo on the box. I'd buy Linksys, I've got a wireless g D-Link router and have nohting but problems with it, but my gigabit switch is working great.

That is why I said that there is even no need to 802.11g. the original 11mbps wireless is faster then needed for any internet gaming. I have Comcast and I have their highest service which is supposedly 8mbps, but I have seen bursts up to 10+mbps.

If you are a gamer, you would want the connection with the lowest latency, transfer speeds are not overly important as long as its a broadband connection.

We used to get ipbans from servers becasue we had a hax that gave us 30-ish pings.

The city of minneapolis and st paul are going Wi-Fi inside the 694/494 loop.

Sooo you will have wireless access without a router in the entirety of the metro area

Kinda sucks though because you cant log in two computers and share the connection and i hear its really slow...

This was also supposed to be up and running by sept this year and so far isnt.

Even on a B network gaming has always been fine for me. I had a Pre-N router and it worked well, plaster walls dominate wireless signal though. You're setup should work well, get a G wireless router and cards if you transfer tons of data all the time if not B works just as well. The bottleneck of the internet is never your home network.

Amen... i can notice a huge difference in ping (usually about 15-20ms) going from a wireless laptop on 11b to a wired 100mbps computer... it's like having a highway and the way to get from point a to point be is either 20 people on 2 seater crotch rockets vs 40 people on a school bus... the throughput may be higher for the school bus, but the crotch rockets would still be faster for gaming...

evercrack and wow use only about 10-15kbps, yet the connection suffers a decent amount on wireless...
