I wasnt able to find this in the rules section of billiard play but once you shoot the cue ball and it doesnt hit any other object balls on the table, is this considered a foul? I had one of my friends tell me that as long as it hits 3 edges it will be played from the spot that it stopped at. Explain?

Assuming it's 8 ball tourny rules as far as i know the cue MUST hit another ball. I used to play tourny 9 ball, but it's been a few years. If you don't have a shot you can call a "safe" shot but the cue MUST hit a ball.

Not only MUST the cue ball contact another ball, any given ball on the table MUST either come in contact with a cushin or go in a pocket with every shot or it's a foul. Tournament rules

So it doesnt matter if it hits the egdes three times or whatever? I know that it has to hit a ball but he is trying to tell me that even if it doesnt hit a ball as long as it hits the edge 3 times its not a foul.

I read through the official rules and it doesnt mention it anywhere in there so I am guessing he is full of it.

No, I was playing for fun. I could give a shit less if I win or lose. I was just getting pissed cuz they kept coming up with rules throughout the night.

How about when playing the 8 ball? I know you lose if you sink it in the wrong pocket or if you scratch but if you table scratch when going for the 8 ball?

My memory is pretty vague but if you're playing tourny rules a scratch on the 8 is a loss.
