Why not just put in another internal drive?

I have an Iomega external drive that I hook up to make a server backup here at work and bring home with me periodically (for an off-site backup of data). I actually really like it, it has both usb 2.0 and firewire, and came with automatic backup software (that I tried on the server, but SB Server 2003 doesn't care for it). It's 120gb in size, but I bought it quite some time ago, think I paid under 100 for it even back then.

I've bonked it around, left it in my truck in both extreme heat and cold, and things like that. It can take quite a bit of abuse and I have yet to have any sort of problem with it. It even still looks like new.

Save your cash and pickup an external hdd enclosure, you can get on for like $50 and swap any internal drive you want whenever you want, its worked great for me especially when i have stacks of 20gb ones laying around all over anyways

That works fine if you already have drives laying around, but if you have to buy an internal drive, then buy an enclosure, usually it ends up being more expensive than simply picking up an external drive.

Western Digital FTW. Avoid Maxtor. Seagate drives are good also.

Seagate or WD, Seagates local so if that helps tip the scales at all there you go.

I've got a 250gig WD. Picture attached. I bought it a year ago for like $190. after rebates. Used it once or twice to fill it full of pron DVD rips worked perfectly. new egg drops it for $167 + $10 shipping.

I haven't even plugged it in for over a year. I have no use for it as I got 3 big HDDs in my main computer. If U want it $155 and I'll leave it full of w/e pron is on it. and will be in original box with original CircuitCity bag and receipt.

Yes, but you can get more internal drives to use and they are usually much cheaper than another external drive. Just another thought.

Yes, and to help your argument out, it gives more flexibility, by being able to install the drive inside of a computer at some point if you need to.

However, most of those enclosures don't protect quite as well as a manufactured external drive such as the Iomega I have (chose that one because of the abuse it can take).

As far as non-work related stuff, I've been known to simply lug an internal drive around with me, you could even put it in an antistatic bag if you're anal about it. But I see no need to put it in an enclosure.

Watch bensbargains.net for a good harddrive deal to come around . They have them all the time. I would buy an enclosure, you can get them for well under $30 now.
