What is the best automotive motor in history?

There's many variables: Price, longevity, ease of modding, stock horsepower, reliability, excetera, excetera? Let the arguing begin.

In terms of Staying Power/importance? Small-block Chevy.

In terms of ground-breaking-ness? LT5 'Vette motor.

My current favorite? 3.8L Buick Intercooled Turbo

SBC... not because i think it's the best design or anything like that.
just that everyone and there mom has one so parts (whether performance or replacement) are everywhere and every combo has been tried, etc. oh and they're cheap!

2jz-bla motors are supposed to be really badass as to the power that they can handle, good internals. - but still not a real fan..

2JZ is probabaly the best overall quality wise, but it won't be much for power unless you add forced induction to it. It is built as tough as any totally aftermarket ford or chevy small block. So for that I will give it a big asterik after it's name.

In terms of NA.... I have to give more points to the Big Block chevy. The LS-6 454 can make well over 600 hp on stock internals and with worked stock heads... actually any BBC can be made to do that was equipped with open chamber heads (rectangle or oval port)... although not all have forged internals like the LS-6.

Next the SOHC 427 Ford motor was one badass engine as well... but not a lot of them were available to the general public.

I will give props to the small block chevy (the LS1 is a great engine... probably the best engine you can buy for a daily driver for power on a NA platform. The orginal LT1 from 70 and 71 was also a badass engine. Heads can be worked to for over 500hp, made 360-370 stock... forged crank, "pink" rods, etc.).

The next level down I will go with the Mopar 440, the Mopar 360, and finally the 426 Hemi.

Reliabilty and towing power: Ford 300I6... maybe Dodge 318.... maybe.
Ease of modding and cost: 350 sbc

I don't really know much about hemi's and older mopars though I can't comment on those, But of course the best block ever would be the 351w IMO

thats my vote as well, anyone who knows anything about this motor knows its so over kill in everything aspect, I dont know of a single other factory motor that can take 1000+ hp without issues. If you have seen the main caps and just the block it self you would know that that thing has alot goin on, I wish ford or anyone els for that matter would just put the time and money into a new small block that could handle that power, with that said the 03 cobra shortblock is proving itself a worthy challenger as we speek

Reliability wise i think the GM 3.8/3800 series motors take the cake, Along with Jeeps 4.0.

Definatly the most reliable and easiest to work on is the small block chevy. however the 5.0 is the same way. I feel that the best moter ever put in a production run of anything more than 2 has got to be the 427. The best engine ever put in a car would be in 69 the ZL1 all aluminum 427 but there was only 2 made.....so i really cant back my argument up besides that is makes huge numbers on the dyno.
