This is pathetic what they want to do.

P.S. I don't hate hunting. I hunt ducks, pheasant, and grouse. This is poor sportsmanship.

While I agree that the practice of shooting wolves from a Helicopter is rather pointless, I will not accept the pure propaganda posted on that site as the whole story.

If the wolves are not offered protection under endangered species status, they must not be endangered. It would not only be pointless to offer them that protection if they indeed are not endangered, it would lesson the meaning of that status in the first place and what it means to species that are indeed endangered.

What we don't know after reading that is if there is a reason they have overturned the ban such as overpopulation of the wolves and its adverse effects on the rest of the environment they live in.

When I also consider the source of this information I am even more skeptical as to what is really going on. Upon reading that page I am left with more questions than answers. What is clear to me is that this organization is entirely against the killing of any animal at any time as they view it as "inhumane". They have an agenda and have applied a heavy dose of spin to the issue.

Sorry, not gonna be signing it folks .
If you are able, save them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own. And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind.

Guess what I saw flying over the Mississippi on highway 94, a Bald Eagle. Can you imagine that, an Eagle flying over a highly urban area. I remember when I was a youngster in the early seventies. You never, EVER saw an Eagle. They were nearly wiped out by DDT. This was a pesticide to kill bugs. The bugs were eaten by mice and other critters. Hawks, Falcons, and Eagles being at the top of the food chain ate these small critters that ate the bugs. It built up in their systems. When they went to lay eggs the shells were so thin that when the parents sat on the shells they cracked. What's the point of this? If it wasn't for groups such as Defenders of Wildlife and the EPA these beautiful birds would probably be extinct. Can you imagine if we caused our national symbol to become extinct?
Matt, I'm sure there is some spin and propoganda in this appeal. Your argument that they are over populated doesn't make sense. You see nature has a way to deal with this. If there's to many of a certain species they starve(both predators and prey). Thus when times are lean for food, creatures have smaller broods. When prey animals become abundant, carnivores will produce more offspring. We don't need man to control species populations, especially in an area so sparsely populated as Alaska. Maybe metro areas but not the wild. Face it it's an economic thing. Wisconsin for instance sold over 600,000 deer licenses this year. At well over a $100 for a license this brings in a lot of money to the states coffers.
What about the boom in deer populations you might wonder? Well the problem is man has decimated the predators. How many Cougars and Wolfs do you find running around here?

I know what you're saying and I agree with you. My point is that we know far too little about the situation to jump on their bandwagon. I really have no idea if they are indeed overpopulated or not. That is kind of my point. That information would be critical for making an informed decision on the issue, which is again, my point. The reasons very easily COULD be economic in nature but we don't know that.... or anything else really...

Yes, nature can keep itself in check in regards to species population.... Along with that, some species are destined to become endangered, and yes, even die off entirely - much to the mortification of organizations such as this one. But nature cannot always correct imbalances in today's world and overpopulation can be a problem. That is what I am saying - along with the point that we don't know what the current situation is up there. We also do not know the details of the actual legislation in question. We are getting one side of the story - SOP for organizations such as these. For all we know the bill only applies to metro areas and they are tracking the number of wolves killed closely for a specific end goal to keep the population within certain limits. That page suggests it is a free-for-all and everyone is lining up with the chin mounted .50 cals on their Apaches hot and the chopper idling on the tarmac .....

I am not saying institutions such as the EPA are useless and don't serve a purpose or have success stories.... But lets be realistic here..... It would be naive to think they always stick to the facts and make logical decisions. Just look at "Global Warming" for instance....

Anyways, the entire idea of perfection in regards to this issue is quite the queer dream. Things die. Life.... is dangerous.

                points well taken Matt.

Global warming The continents have shifted. The magnetic poles have shifted. Ocean currents change. Man has recorded temps for 150 years. This is less than a blink in the earths history. For people to think that this temp change is all due to mankind is utterly ridiculous. I'm sure there was some major global warming when the last glaciers retreated from the northern hemisphere.
