    Compaq Proliant, server issues.

any one know if, on the Compaq Proliant 1600 servers(rack mount) if you need to fill all 6 drive slots, in order for it to read. Ive been screwing with this since last night, and cant get them to show up.

When Server is boooted, the drives show power, then go blank. Ive only got 3 4gig drives in there, as i planned to attach the 70 gig storage tower to it. But, I cant get the 4 gig drives to read/boot/detect.

Gonna screw with it some more. Just seeing if any one had any idea on it.

No, you do not need to fill all the slots. You can have as little as 1 drive in there. Your drives could be going bad or the SCSI/RAID card could be going bad. What model Smart Array card is it?

Id have to pull it apart. I didnt think that i would need all 6, that seemed goofy to me. What i dont get is, that they power up, then they just shut down.

I wonder if the drives are not compatible... that might be an issue..

any one have a couple small scsi's they dont need?

      Ultra 2 compat.

I believe until you've configured them in the Array Controller, they light up during boot, but then go dark since they're not being used. Have you tried running SmartStart? You can DL from HP's web site.

        Good luck!

Depends if its been configed for RAID and how many are missing. If it's not setup for raid (JBOD) then it doesn't matter. If it is setup for RAID then depending on the configuration if more then 1 is missing it may fail.

I run a 1600R for a colo and have an 800R at home, ugh, I fucking hate them. It really depends on the hardware and support you have. They are awesome, yet horrible at the same time.
