    Claiming Mileage

    Who can claim mileage on there taxes?

    Specifically construction workers who work at different job sites through out the year.

          If you are traveling between places of work, you can deduct mileage. For example, if you do some work at home, then drive to one worksite, then another, then home - each trip would be deductible. If you are merely driving from home to the first worksite each day, that trip and the return are not deductible. If you go from one site to another during the day while working, that mileage is deductible. I'm sure Stormwalker can set us all straight on this!

          There = a place
          Their = belonging to someone, possessive
          They're = contraction of they + are

                      Here is the lowdown.

                      First of all someone posted something about medical mileage. Medical mileage is different than business mileage (as far as rates). Also medical mileage falls under schedule A of the 1040, which is subject to limitations (we'll just leave it at that).

                      Business mileage is for unreimbursed mileage "while on the clock" so to speak. This does not include commuting to and from work.

                      Mileage is a little weird this year because of the tax break given due to hurricane Katrina. Here is the mileage schedule:

                      Business:

                      1/1/05 to 8/31/05: .405 per mile
                      9/1/05 to 12/31/05: .485 per mile

                      And for those of you like hopalong that might be curious about medical mileage:

                      1/1/05 to 8/31/05: .15 per mile
                      9/1/05 to 12/31/05: .22 per mile

                      Mileage will go back down for 2006, don't recall the rate off the top of my head.

                      Hope that answers your question.

                        No big deal. The info I just posted is not secret or anything. Just have to help those out that have not yet found the nifty thing called "google". Or shit, even www.irs.gov.

                          So if I drive to your house, get a reacharound, can I write that off?

                          Edit, I hit 3600 posts flirting with Stomwalker. Excellent.
