    Home Network Help

So I built my first computer and it is AWESOME!! Now I'm trying to network it with my old one and I can't get the damn thing to work. I have XP Professional on the new one Home on the old one, is this part of my problem?? I've ran that damn network setup about 50 times and no luck. I set up my network at work and had no problems with 5 computers and now this stupid thing is kicking my ass. Any suggestions??

helps if you give a little better description of exactly what you're trying to do, and the exact setup. Are you trying to share files across the computers? Are you just trying to hook both up to the internet? Have a router/firewall/switch/wireless??

Shareing files and internet. Have a Linksys router w/switch. The internet connection works on both computers but can't get files from one to the other.

well, you need to turn on sharing for the computer that you want to share files from. You right click the folder you want to share, and click sharing and security, then share them. I usually just make a folder on the desktop and call it share or something like that. Then what you want to do is figure out the IP of each of the computers. You go to start, then the run command, then type cmd and hit ok. In that window you type ipconfig. Then look for "IP Address", it *SHOULD* be something like 192.168.1.100.

So, we'll say, XPHome is 192.168.1.100
            pro is 192.168.1.101

Go to my computer. In the "address bar" where it actually says "My Computer", on the Pro system, you would type in:

            \\192.168.1.100\folderyoushared

on the xp home system you would type in:

            \\192.168.1.101\folderyoushared

That should do it for you.

Very simple first question. Can the machines even ping each other? Make sure no firewalls are preventing this action from happening either.

Yes they can ping eachother, one computer has the windows firewall and the other has the NVIDIA firewall

nvidia firewall blows, disable it. Windows firewall will need file and printer sharing opened up... although it should do it automatically as soon as you create a share.
