I'm looking at a 1991 Toyota 4 Runner. New Mexico truck, no rust, SR5 V6 auto. Just had the timing set, water pump and radiator done. 135,000 miles. It's really clean in and out. Drives great, a/c blows cold and everything works. Tranny shifts tight and the 4x4 works fine. Anyone know what issues these things have? Anything i should look for?
Possible new winter beater, need opinions.

Well, I am sure everyone knows what I will say. I am going to suggest you also look at Jeep Cherokees (XJ). At least the vehicle you are looking at now is also a good option. Here are the strengths of each:
Jeep's 4.0L I6 is indestructible. Have fun maxing out the 7 digit odometer.
The 4 Runner is body on frame, compared to the Jeep's unibody, and I prefer the body on frame construction. However, both seem to rust equally badly.
Jeep Cherokees are usually cheaper, both initial cost and repairs & modifications (lifts, lockers, etc).
The Cherokee has a better 4 wheel drive system. There were a couple of different t-cases used, both equally strong. Also, the auto tranny is very strong.
Do some research to see which is best for you, they are not that dissimilar, but I think the Jeeps hold up better. I see a LOT more early 90s Jeeps on the road than early 90s 4runners.

My Dad had a 91 4 Runner. Now he has a 2000 4 Runner. My brother had a 97 Jeep Cherokee. In my opinion the 4 runners are great trucks. The 91 was a tiny bit underpowered but ran great. I drove and rode in my brothers Jeep. There is no comparison between the two. The Toyota is much more refined. I would of rather owned my Dads 91 4 Runner than my brothers 97 Jeep.2009 CTS-V
