I think it mostly has something to do with the positioning of the toilet. The toilet is usually down at the end of the bathroom so it makes the most sense to have it on the left (from a looks/function standpoint).

I think it started in china because they do all of there washing and other stuff with there left hand. That’s why it’s disrespectful to shake with the left hand in china. “Because that’s the dirty hand” that could be why it’s on the left side but I could be wrong

Thats not just China. Although I have never heard of that in China anyway.
Middle east and India where that is prevalent. That is why they cut your left hand off, this way you have to eat wit the same hand you wipe your ass with. Not alot of soapy water and TP there.
