    VW - Phaeton

Was over at the Big Bowl in southdale over the weekend and was impressed when i saw this car in the parking lot... at first i thought it was a new BMW or a Mercedes but when i took a second look i saw the VW on the back! after just checking their website i am no longer impressed...

Basically it comes in 2 models..

    V8 (335hp) starting at $66,950

    and the W12 (420hp) starting at $96,100

id rather just get a bmw for that much money and pull u-turns at 80 and not worry about a thing

66k for a VW? That is nuts. I'd much rather have a brand new M3 over a VW.

Those things are nuts, who would pay that much for a brand that is so known for having 'issues'.

My dad was looking at getting the W12 model but the dealership people were being ass clowns so he just went and got a Mercedes instead.

VW as a company owns Bently, but I assure you there are many differences. They also own Lamborghini, and of course Audi is like the upscale twin.

If you compare the Phaeton to similarly equipped German luxury cars it's pretty on-par as far as the price goes, often times it's the cheapest.

Can anyone tell me what the cheapest, new, full size, BMW is that has a V12? how about MB? Most everyone doesn't really care, but the VW is the cheapest and the Phaeton supposedly has pretty good build qwuality, they don't build them next to the Golf or Jetta, and they are built in Germany.

That’s like Ford building a sedan and charging 60k for it, it just does not work that way. I don’t care if it has a V12. People that are looking to spend 60k+ on a car want something with class. The VW is not about class and sophistication. That’s like Toyota building a nice car, and charging a lot for it. Oh yeah, they do make one, and it’s called a Lexus, a step much further ahead of VW in quality, looks, resale value, and other shit I am forgetting.

Yup, then you are still driving a VW. When you are driving a Benz or a BMW, Audi even, it has some sort of prestige to it.

here is my question, wtf is it good for anyways? it's not going to be a sports car by any means, but if it could actually go offroad for some wheeling, which I doubt it could do very well, would anyone actually do it with something that expensive, let alone the type of owners? So, I am just looking for the purpose of the vehicle? What is the sales pitch besides "now you can be even more materialistic and impress your neighbors"?

You guys are coming at this the wrong way. REGARDLESS of what other cars they make or the opinion some may have due to the fact that VWs have suffered some quality problems of late, one can not ignore the engineering behind, or the finished result of, the final product. It offers 4-Motion AWD and is built like a tank. It routinely gets high praise and is said to be a worthy competitor to the established marques of MB and BMW, in the German ranks.

This is a world-class car. Period.

Here's some reading. You might be surprised.

hahaha, who would go wheelin in a massive luxury car?? lol, wtf? it's a car merely for a rich old fart to drive to the golf course in, the 12cyl. version is faster than the R32.

and seriously, the only thing that makes the Phaeton a Volkswagen is the badge, don't knock it till you've at least sat in it.

for reference, here is a Phaeton:

p.s. the build quality problems seem to be focused on the South American built cars, which account for most of them. But the Phaeton, R32 and an occasional Golf, Jetta, are built in Germany.

Why not just buy an Audi A8, same car, same price, and it's not labelled a VW.

FYI- The w12 in those are J U N K. But the interiors are not too shabby. If spending 90+k, Im still buying a 750i w/ exhuast, wheels and tint every day of the week.
