Are GM turbo diesels any good?

Are the V8 Turbo diesels on the 95+ GM full size trucks any good?
    Is there any problem areas?
Id like a cummins in a ram, but that is out of my price range right now.
    Thanks

2001 and later 6.6 Duramax diesels are by far GM's best. The 6.2 of previous years is surely "sturdy", but hardly a worthy performer.
Ford 7.3 Powerstroke is surely powerful, but large and loud.

Thanks, the 01+ would put me out of my price range again.
Same with the Ford, if I spend that much, ill get the simplicity and reliablity of a Cummins.
Thanks for info! Anyone else feel free to comment.

Everyone up north drives a Ford truck for some reason, even in the diesels. There must be a reason for using them for farm use and such. Otherwise I know nothing.

The 6.2 non-turbo is a worthless pile of crap with regards to power. It will run for a long time and is fairly reliable, but it is gutless.

The 6.5 turbo is better on power but still quite a bit short of what a Cummins equipped Dodge or Power Stroke equipped Ford is capable of. The Duramax is a very nice engine, as others of stated above, but you will pay for it....

I'm a GM guy but you will never catch me buying a 6.2/6.5 equipped truck unless it is given to me for free or very close to it.
If you are able, save them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own. And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind.

If you do get one....contact Banks and see if they still have their upgrade available for it. A guy I went to HS with had one of the older Diesel Jimmy's and that really woke that thing up.

THe B cummins engine has been a rock steady motor for over 30 years. Get a cummins.

CHevy has never been able to build a deisel. Stay AWAY!!!!!!!! Duramax is better.

Powerstrokes are fine for what you need. They hold up well

chevy diesels are unbelievably awful. i wouldnt take it for free unless i could find an idiot to turn around and sell it to. and i dont know what on earth you people are talking about saying the duramax is a solid engine.

cummins or powerstroke. there arent any other competitors in the consumer diesel truck market.

If you dont need a diesel I wouldnt by one. They are loud smelly dirty and the list goes on. Oh yea and WHEN they break they are expensive to fix. They are really finicky in the winter to. They are pussies when it comes to getting cold. This list of shit applies to any diesel. I know people will say otherwise so flame on, as i know right know there are exceptions.

But if you really want one/need one get a mid 90's powerstorke with a few miles on it and you should be happy
