Just about sums it up for the overpriced Jetta.
But hey, their interior is pretty.
You would probably fit right in with the VW crowd.

I know VW's are not what I expect from "German Engineering", what do you know about Audi's that makes you say that?

my parents bought a new 02-03 (cant remember) 1.8t a couple years ago. Had to be brought in for computer problems twice because it would get fugged up and have no power. Headlights replaced twice. And the fuel pump went out and they had to wait over a week for it to get here from germany and get replaced. This all happened within a year of owning it and i think i am forgeting something. They got rid of it after that.

I have heard similar stuff from others, lots of electrical issues.

Yeah, i liked my parents car, it was a nice ride. I drove it quite a bit when i had a car down for mods or other work.. Just would be worried about reliability, especially if its not warrantied.

Read 1998 Audi A4 reviews from real owners. Find out what they're like to drive, and what problems they have. Page 8 of 13.

vw is at the bottom of customer satisfaction with the quality, but near the top of perceived quality among the public.

audi is better than vw but is no better when you factor in that you paid more.

there was a large article on this in "automobile" (i think) a few months ago comparing data throughout europe on customer satisfaction. I was sort of pleased to see that audi/vw group faired awfully... i've always been partial to bmw. mercedes also struggled (but the argument can be made that they were brought down by all the "cheap" cars they sell in europe and don't necessarily import to north america. i'm sure their higher end car buyers are at a higher level of satisfaction than the mean amongst their european buyers) no big surprise, but the japanese companies were the big winners in that study/comparison

I am somewhat of a VW fan (have 2 of them) and even I have to admit VW's quality has gone down from what they used to be. All that "excellent German engineering" reputation you hear is because of their past models, not their present. The mk2 and mk3 models were bulletproof, especially the 8v 2.0L, and could take an extraordinary beating. Not true with the mk4 and now mk5. So, yes, VW is highly reliable, if you stay away from their newer stuff.

As far as Audis go, if you get the quattro, it will amaze you how much snow and stuff it can go through (better than most full size 4x4 trucks). If you ever need to repair your Audi, it will also amaze you how much it costs, as you take out the second mortgage on your house.

mid 90s 3 series can be had cheap and respond real well to mods.

its amazing how fast those m3s are with only 240 hp stock.

personally, i prefer the mid-late 90s models over the newer ones anyways so they seem affordable to me. the newer ones the edge has really come off of them (although they are faster- they no longer are as aggressively designed to be "sports" cars but rather have the daily commute in the back of their computerized brains)
