Just my opinion, but I think the church needs a very conservative leader. Just because society is becoming more liberal any adopting a anything goes lifestyle, doesn't mean that the church should agree with it just to be popular.
When I was a kid we had "old school" priest and no matter what you asked him he had a answer. to him everything was black and white. When he retired they brought in a new guy, (that I'm 90% sure was gay) and if you asked him a question his response was "how do you feel about it" or "what does your conscience tell you" I quit going to that church about a year later. When you 18 and looking to your spiritual leader for guidance or advice and the best he can do is answer a question with a question, it's time to look somewhere else for help. But he never failed to mention that my donations were down....jackass. The guy that later replaced him wasn't any better.

I don't know that that's so much conservative vs. liberal. Sounds like the guy just didn't know wtf he was doing to me.

One glaring problem I see in the church for instance is it's belief in celibacy. Supressing a natural urge like sex... isn't natural. And it leads to shit like all the sex scandals THROUGHOUT the church. It's not like it was one limited case.

Or the belief that women are inferior... these are ideas that need to be removed from the church... and this guy surely isn't the one to do it. Not to mention things like a more progressive mass instead of "sit there, listen to the priest read out of a sermon book, go home". Making the mass interesting and relating it to people's lives today isn't a bad thing.

when I say conservative/liberal I don't mean politics..sorry maybe I should have been more clear. I meant that in more of a dictionary meaning.

I agree there may be some better approaches to things. with the sex thing, I'm no saint, but if I could do it all over again and have waited for marriage I would have. and I thnk there are a lot of people whos lives get messed up from it. weather it be disease or pregnancy or just that having sex with a lot of people tends to "cheapen" the whole thing (I know that's not true with everybody, but I think it does make a difference in a lot of people) so I don't have a problem with them trying to teach the benefits of waiting. but they shouldn't cast you out if you give in to temptation.
I don't see a reason to allow priests to marry, and I'll wait til the next post to give me reasons for that.

I do agree with you that women should be treated as equals in the church and anywhere else for that matter. I also agree with you on the strict rituals of mass. I've always thought that was a little silly. and even my grandfather who probably never missed a Sunday at church in his life used to say...it's better to be fishing and thinking about God, than to be in church thnking about fishing...

It is about liberal versus conservative ideologies regarding communist and socialist tendancies. If you want something different than what your church offers, find another one. Don't tear down the customs and heritage of an established institution until it suits your needs. All I hear is me me me me me coming from you......

As for women as being inferior..... hardly... Before I go any further, how about you "Bring the Facts" and show me precisely where in the teachings of the Catholic church it states that women are inferior to men. Go ahead. Get that done and we will go from there.

I'm up in the air about the celibacy for Priests thing. I understand the idea behind it (devotion), but I also wonder when it was introduced to the doctrine and by whom and for what reason. I have 'heard' that it was not part of Christ's original teachings. Basically I need to do more research on it before I can form an opinion and stand on it.

Actually it wasn't so much the Catholic Faith that was anti-women, as Pope John Paul II was. He didn't think it was right that women were Priests, and things such as that. Perhaps thats what he was pointing to.

mememe? Priests being able to marry/have sex has NOTHING to do with me. A mass that isn't drivel out of a book and actually relates to people's lives so they get something out of the scripture again, is nothing to do with me. It's for the better good of the religion as a whole. I really couldn't care less what they decide to enact in service, it's just a blatant observation being a catholic myself and hearing from friends family that are also catholics on the subject.

As for women being inferior to men in the church's eyes, sure thing, but not until I'm done with class And yes the refusal to let them give mass is one glaring starting point. Hell, they weren't even allowed to give communion for a while there.

If you're a catholic I really shouldn't need to list everything else but I will just to humor you since you feel the need to challenge everything. If not (which I'm guessing from your replies) stfu and stay the fuck out of it, you get no say anyways.
