Our army budget is not just tanks,jeeps and soldiers. It includes a fleet of transport jets, trucks engineering batallions. It also includes the largest helicopter strike force in the world. We have a vehichle for every soldier down the the Humvee dirt bike and dune buggy. China still loads its troops up into cattle trailors and forces them to dig fox holes and trenches a WWII style of fighting. At best they could put up a vietnam style military. We dont have that military so we're using the iraqi's We're set up to deploy 20,000 combat ready troops within 24 hours and 250,000 within a week. We're the worlds police not because we want to be but because we're the only military capable of it. Ony britian has anywhere near as effective of an offensive military, and at that they have about 1/4 the ability as we do.

Dont get me wrong, china could put up a gorilla fight against america but on the open battle field china could out number us 200 to 1 and id still pick america to win out. The miliary is also structured to perform urban assaults like no other country before as well. We can almost ignore sun tzu's law of attacking an enemy in their cities because of how precise we are, though it is still more dangerous than the usuall combat method.

I dont know if its worth it to you personally, but to the security of a nation is the biggest gainere of investment. America is the most prosperous nation on earth because we're the most secure. Insecurity is the bane of economic growth, our military costs alot. How much do you think we profit economically from the stability it gives us?

I was a lieutenant in the infantry. Airborn Ranger and I was loaded into cattle trucks often. I also dug foxholes and spent days, eating sleeping and deficating in my fox hole. But thanks for not having a clue

I had a M4 with 270 rounds. That is standard. 6 weeks of basic? OMG you are sooooo far off. 8 weeks and then AIT for your MOS mine was 11b,11m,11x,11p add up all the extra training and you are looking at a YEAR!

Defense is good... but we let them waste way tooo much money on frivelous projects. 5 out of my 6 prof's have worked with the defense department and some of the projects they were given money to waste on... *shrug*

I don't have a problem with them being budgeted but there's REALLY not enough auditing on what it's being spent on. I'd rather see troops with new guns/armor/whatever they need than some retarded computer program meant to track invoices being built inhouse instead of buying something off the shelf for 1/50th the price. I would guess they could half their budget if they cut some of the frivelous spending.

This one always gets me... So I leave this open to the military boys here... what exactly did we learn in vietnam that we aren't repeating in Iraq? The only thing I see is that there isn't as much dissention among the media on the situation. This is a genuine question, not even a poke/jab. I really don't see any lessons learned, I just see better propoganda on our home soil keeping the general public at bay.
