I'm being prodded to let this update through on a phone, and before blindly doing so, I wanna see if anyone has had any negative experiences (large or small) attributed to moving to Lollipop 5.0. My first thought is always; 'okay what am I going to lose this time?' and 'what's not going to work anymore after this switch?'. Anyone that's gone through this have any negatives?
Moving from KitKat 4.4.4 to Lollipop 5.0 - Experiences?

This. Mainly if the phone is 3+ years old, you shouldn't be running KitKat unless it's a true Nexus device. Some odd Apps should be the only ones that may have an update problem since KK has been out for a while.Originally posted by Exjay View PostReally depends on the phone and apps you use. I am not a big fan of the update.
The camera app updated. And now there is a noticeable lag from the time you want to picture taken to the time it actually takes it. I know there are apps out there, but I have not looked. I really like the fact that when I take video all I have to do is tap the screen and it will take a photo as fast as you can tap it. I like this feature and am not willing to switch if the video screen picture tap is gone. If someone knows of an app that does this, please, let me know.
When I first loaded it Chrome looked weird. There were no more tabs for what you have open. I had to google how to get the fucking tabs back. What an idiotic thing to do.
The gallery is now gone. I had to download this program called quickpic to get it back. Another idiotic thing to eliminate. I have a Nexus 4. When I want to look at pics, I have to fucking cycle back through every pic. There is no grid view from within the camera app. If I wanted to look through my pics in the grid view, I had to go to the gallery. And then they got rid of that. Fucking retards.
Being able to see and read the first few lines of when someone sends me a text are gone. They just replaced it with an icon that pops up eliminating that preview. It takes one extra step to have to read them. I know...first world problems. But it was just fine before, change it back you dingleberries.
The function of closing out of apps is much more of a pain in the ass. Instead of being able to swipe them away easily, they tried to make it all fucking fancy. Now it's a huge pain in the dick to clear them out. Takes me 3-4 finger swipes to do it. Was no issue before. Another pointless update.
Some of the good things.
They finally fixed google calendar. It worked fine as it was for a long time. Then they tried to get all fancy again and took away the week view. But left everything else if I remember. They finally got that back in there, but the new calendar sucks. It was fine before. Simple and easy to use. Now everything seems to take 1-2 extra steps to do the same shit I did before.
On my phone they got rid of the bars for the cell service and wifi icons. Now it's just solid white color against a black background. Again, not a big deal, but it did change. I dunno, I kinda liked having bars as opposed to a gauge.
They made some of the icons nicer looking. Something I care nothing about.
This update included for the first time, a flashlight app from google. Only shitty thing is that I have to drag the screen down to get to it. There is no way that I have found to put it on the home screen. And that's another thing. When I swipe from top to bottom, the fucking screen takes two swipes to open. It's almost like it half opens and then needs you to swipe again to open it.
My phone now comes with "cast screen". I have two Chromecasts which kick ass BTW. I can view whatever is on my phone on any TV in about 5 seconds. I like this feature because I can watch video that my Chromecast would normally not be able to open on the TV.
Besides these two things the cast screen and flashlight it almost feels like they took things that were working just fine and fucked them up because someone thought they could do a better job and make those existing apps and phone tweaks better than they were previously. Pretty typical corporate world bullshit. I saw this very thing happen at least a dozen times. And it's nothing more than ego's. And usually those ego's are attached to the dumbest worst decision makers in the company.
If I could do it again, I'd pass on this pile.

Galaxy S5 with not even a handful of apps that I've installed on it. Others were already pre-installed when new of course. Awesome, this is the 1st hand experience I'm looking for, thanks for this entire replyOriginally posted by Outrun View PostI am not a big fan of the update.

The camera lag sounds very annoying. IMO you shouldn't have to install yet another app to counter some jackoff's idea of an 'upgrade' to something that worked fine before.
That also sounds annoying. I don't use the phone for a ton of internet, but when I do I'd like it to be the same/similar to what the ol' desktop rig is so I don't have to re-learn a bunch of shit.Originally posted by Outrun View PostWhen I first loaded it Chrome looked weird. No good! I'm used to using the gallery, it's now old hat and I won't give it up. Grid is where it's at, though I don't usually go thru a bunch of pics from the camera, I just go to the gallery. Here again though, it's dumb to have to DL something else to get back what you had in the first placeOriginally posted by Outrun View PostThe gallery is now gone. , jerks. I wonder if it's device specific or if it doesn't matter.
Currently I can view like the 1st few words or a line as soon as I get a text w/out unlocking the phone. If that's what yours did and what you're talking about, I can live w/out that. I actually prefer not to have that happen for one or more reasonsOriginally posted by Outrun View PostBeing able to see and read the first few lines of when someone sends me a text are gone. , so that's the only change so far I'd like.
Also something I don't do real often as I don't have a bunch of apps on mine, but I agree about that being another pointless BS 'update'.Originally posted by Outrun View PostThe function of closing out of apps is much more of a pain in the ass. I don't use the calendar on this phone, but do on a Droid and the fucker's never worked rightOriginally posted by Outrun View PostSome of the good things.

. I have to fight with it constantly to simply view the current damn day and events for said day. I hate it. I dislike that POS Droid too as far as that goes.
From the sounds of it I'd prefer the bars too.Originally posted by Outrun View PostOn my phone they got rid of the bars for the cell service and wifi icons. Woopty doo, right? lol.Originally posted by Outrun View PostThey made some of the icons nicer looking. Something I care nothing about.
This phone originally came with a simple flashlight deal (dunno if it was considered a widget or app). I dug into things and found a nice flashlight icon that I was able to drag out and drop onto the home screen for quick access. It was a super simple one-touch deal and you had full light, exactly what I wanted and all I needed it to be. I used it all the time at night. Then this POS locked me out and I was forced to go thru a factory reset. I of course, ONCE AGAIN, lost a bunch of shit during that process. I wanna say there was an 'upgrade' at that time too. When I got up and running again, I noticed my flashlight icon was nowhere to be found and I couldn't even find it where I found it previously. All I could now do was add some stupidass floating 'tool bar' with the light icon on it and I could access it that way. The floating deal was dumb as shit though and annoyingly in the way all the time. I went in and challenged one of the Vzn store dudes to find and get this back. After a good 15-20 minutes, he could not, and of course his go-to band-aid 'fix' for this was that I could DL a free app from the play store to make it workOriginally posted by Outrun View PostThis update included for the first time, a flashlight app from google. . I said I'm aware of this option, but felt that was completely stupid considering the phone originally came with an icon I could drag out and use, but now I have to install a different app to accomplish that? So of course this wound up being my only real option and it was blamed on the reset changing this somehow. The funny thing was he goes about telling me he uses such and such app and it's supposed to be the "brightest flashlight" app you can get. I lol'd and asked him to explain to me the mechanics of how an app can physically make the LED brighter than what it is at full-on anyway. I swear I heard the Jeopardy theme.
That sounds pretty sweet. IDK how to go about setting that upOriginally posted by Outrun View PostMy phone now comes with "cast screen". I have two Chromecasts which kick ass BTW. Exactly. I feel the same way about most 'updates' of shit that was working fine in the first place. Someone feels they need to re-invent the wheel and they turn it into a squareOriginally posted by Outrun View PostBesides these two things the cast screen and flashlight it almost feels like they took things that were working just fine and fucked them up because someone thought they could do a better job and make those existing apps and phone tweaks better than they were previously. I appreciate the input. It's just what I was looking for. I'm not sure if I wanna go fourth with this, but IDK how to make it quit showing up at EVERY damn swipe it seems. It's very pushy.F/S: '94 Cobra, Rio Red/Saddle, 34.5K Orig Miles, Light Mods, 20yr Owner.

Good deal. While I don't think every S5 will work the exact same or have the exact same things with the exact same 'updates', it's closer than anything else I'd have to guess, so this is good to hear. You lost nothing and haven't had any of the issues Nick mentioned?Originally posted by Akromix View PostI'm running an s5 with lollipop. Works fine. Pretty satisfied. Possibly. I know jack about doing that though, nor the possible drawbacks? Otherwise, I wasn't really 'waiting' for any update. AFAIK I'm fine w/out it, why should I do it is my line of thought.Originally posted by Fernanernie View PostRoot your phone and put on a custom ROM > Waiting for OTA updatesF/S: '94 Cobra, Rio Red/Saddle, 34.5K Orig Miles, Light Mods, 20yr Owner.
