Wireless router disconnecting when PS3 is turned on, guidance requested.

I’ve been having this odd situation where my router will disconnect everything whenever I turn on my PS3(every time). Usually the disconnect only happens for a few seconds, but anything connected to the router(wireless or wired) gets disconnected. Sometimes I get an error that the system has been “disconnected from access point” at which time I have to power cycle the router to get network connection again(on any device going through the router). I usually have to wait about 30-60 seconds for the PS3 to estabilish a stable connection before going into an app or game.

The router is a Linksys WRT54G(almost 10 years old, but has updated firmware) and it has been happening since the first time I connected the PS3 many moons ago(7ish years). This happens whether it’s wired or wireless. I have Comcast internet if that matters, but I don’t have issues if connecting directly to the modem.

This also happens when the system goes from an app(like Netflix) back to the home screen.

If an update is required for an app or a game, there’s a 50/50 chance the connection gets dropped within a few seconds of starting the download. I then have to go back to home screen, start app/game again and try to update again. Once I’m in a game or app, I rarely have issues with dropped connection. If there are no updates required, I typically don't have an issue once the system connects.

I’ve tried port forwarding(I think I did this, but it’s been a while since I’ve screwed around with it), setting static IP…etc, but all have led to dead ends. I don't mind trying different settings, but so far I've tried most suggestions found on the internet without success.

Any suggestions? I wouldn’t object to purchasing a new router if it was as simple as that, but would prefer to keep it under $100.

It's been years since I had a similar router, but I had to change the "MTU" size to 1350 to increase reliability with my Xbox.

Did you try running an ethernet cable to the PS3?

Quick GoogleFu appears that there is a problem with UPnP crashing the router when the PS3 starts up due to the Media Sharing feature, so disable Media Sharing on the PS3, or UPnP on the router, or both
Dear Government, eventually the people with money will tell you to fuck off, and stop paying for those that don't work

If I wire it directly from the modem to the PS3, all is dandy. If I wire it to the router, it still crashes. That was one of the first things I tried.

That has crossed my mind, but I'd buy it for games as well.

I thought I tried those(one or both), but I can try again. It's been a while since I dinked around with it and can't remember exactly what I tried, but I know I checked a bunch of things.

What Fern said, I had a similar issue and I ended up putting a static on the PS3 and I had to change the NAT type. It's been a while but it has been good ever since.
