    Replace garage door springs

Just looking for any leads for someone to install new springs. Before randomly calling places, I thought I'd check with TCS to see if anyone had a preferred shop.

    Thanks,
    Randy

I did mine, but even if you have it done, the info below can help you avoid some pitfalls. One place tried to sell me the wrong springs and I ended up getting them somewhere else. Another place that I used to recommend set the springs incorrectly which resulted in a damaged GDO. They tried to deny the problem and never paid for the additional damages.

I replaced a spring on my garage door, I didn't think it was too difficult? At least not something I'd think of hiring someone else to do.

That is what I was thinking, but many people are telling me it is super dangerous and I'll kill myself. LOL

A secondary reason for having someone come out is to get a quote for a new door after the wife tried to back out without opening the door and cracked a panel. I also want to see what it would cost to have an opener installed on my big shop door.

If the spring estimate is too high, I'll just tackle it myself and try to not injure anyone.

It can be dangerous, but if you get yourself into the habit of thinking about every step you take before you take it you'll be fine! That and never put yourself into the "line of fire" just in case.

Use a long extention and it is not too bad. Had a door guy tell me to paint a stripe down the spring before installing it. After you do it you will see exactly how much it is wound. I had good luck with great garage door for door repairs.

Yeah you can probably fab up a pipe with a pin to fit in the block that rotates the spring. Rotate then cinch it down. Rinse repeat till you have the correct amount of turns for your door weight.

I've done garage springs a couple times. It's really not as bad as you think. I got springs/cables/tools from fleet farm the last time and they held up fine.
