Laptop help!

I'm looking to buy the wife a new laptop and I need some advice.

Every laptop we've bought in the past only lasts about a year before it starts fucking up or slowing down.

Granted these are lower level laptops I guess that's probably to be expected.

What's the most important thing to look for in a laptop? I want it to boot fast and be able to play Internet games without locking up. Should I be looking at the newest processor's or the biggest hard drives? I've been told that the one with the ssd drives are best. What size do you need to be considered good enough?

Format hard drive and re-install Windows when it starts to slow down. SSD drives will help with boot up time and overall "snappy" response. If you aren't storing movies/music/photos you don't need much size to the hard drive, 120GB would prob be smallest I would go, but 1+TB is way overkill for internet and online gaming.

Look at lenovo im pretty happy with my idea pad specs out way better then alot of computers that were alot more and i got a 4 year in house repair. Has an ssd but not big enough to run windows off. I got it on a military discount so it took off 200 if u have that option. Their website also is pretty good at showing different laptops for different uses. Im no expert so i consulted my buddy before buying.

Not all SSD's are the same. If you try to buy the first cheap one you see, you'll probably be disappointed. That said, they have been dropping in price the last couple of months.

If you get an SSD you could just replace the drive & load it with Ubuntu and see if there's any difference. Then you wouldn't have to fuck around with what's on your current drive. You could then swap the SSD from laptop to laptop or PC etc., to see if they boot up & run any faster.
For that matter, you can even run Ubuntu on a USB drive but it will be slower, some of the 3.0's are decently fast for a while if the Laptop also has USB 3.0.

If you don't get an SSD:
Could try reinstalling the OS on one of the laptops you already have and see if there's any difference. Remember to save/back up anything you want to keep. If you stick with Windows, then make sure to run some kind of anti-virus/malware & firewall.

If you don't have a copy of the OS and don't care about saving anything, you could try installing Ubuntu or some other Linux based OS (It's free btw). It's a little different but you won't notice it after a while, especially for Facebook and shit like that.
