Today I rolled out of bed a little tired this morning, didn't sleep much last night.
I got to work, started working on stuff. Had a 10:30 appointment, but they were a no show (this almost never happens to me actually). My Tuesday appointment cancelled that morning, my Wednesday appointment training a bookkeeper in cancelled that morning because she called in sick, it turns out my week that had a bunch of stuff booked didn't turn out to be so booked after all. Could have taken the week off with all this nice weather after all! Oh well.
Anyways, I figured I'd get off of work a little early, 4pm, and get home and do something with the wife. The weather was beautiful, and I was going to take advantage of it.
When I got home, I suggested that we play disc golf. My wife was lukewarm on the idea. My brother informed me that he was going to minnetonka drive in, so that was another option.
We decided on a whim to go hiking on some trails with our dog Eska. Some of you have met our dog Eska, she's a great big Malamute. Anyways, we went hiking most of the afternoon in a woodsy trail system and had a lot of fun.
Afterwards, we swung by Minnetonka drive in... with the dog. Of course, a ton of people wanted to pet her, including a lot of kids and families. I guess something about an animal that looks exactly like a 125lb wolf indicates you should send your kids running to go hug it??? Fortunately, Eska's good with kids. We ate there and hung out a bit. On our way out, a bunch of heavyset motorcycle dudes pretty much surrounded us and crouched down to pet Eska and let her lick their faces (you guys do realize she cleans herself with her tounge too... like everywhere, right?).
After we got home, my brother came over to my house and we played some crappy videogames for a little bit. My wife noticed the dog wasn't acting right; she knows her shit about dogs, and immediately suspected bloat. We rushed her into Eden Prairie to the vet hospital. She got some X rays that confirmed that her stomach twisted, and she was pretty much screwed.
At 11:13, we put her down.
At this point, I like to think she had a pretty fun final day of life with us tonight. She was 4 years of age and very healthy. Not to mention a superbly trained sled dog. I've never had a dog go to bloat before, it's crazy how quick it happens.
Just figured I'd share. It's always hard putting a dog down.
