    Cell Phones. GSM vs. Digital.

I have an At&t cell phone that I've had for years, it just recently started acting up. Since At&t merged with Cingular I guess they were offering a couple phones free to their digital customers if they switch to GSM. I had At&t's GSM when I originally bought my phone and I thought it sucked, I love the Digital network but if I want a new phone I think they want me to switch now.
Does anyone on here have At&t/Cingulars GSM service? how do you like it? I used to have Aerial/Voicestream back in the day and I liked their GSM service. How does it compare?

I just switched from their digital to there "M mode" (GMS) service and it is'nt realy any diffrent in my book. I still don't get shit for service in my house or in my yard for that matter so who knows. You can get a new free phone and stay on digital but you have to sign a 1 contract, btw to get the free phone and go on GMS you must sign a 2 year contract.

I am on their digital and I get great service here in EC and back home around the cities and up as far as St. Michael and beyond.
I read once that GSM doesnt go into St. Michael.

I sell verizon, cingular (sold at&t till the merge), and sprint. Att/Cingular is trying to shut down their old tdma network and stick with only gsm. If you want the most coverage get verizon (cdma technology). If you want rollover minutes get cingular (gsm). As for sprint (cdma, but about 1/4 the towers of verizon), thats what I have, and probably not for long. You can get a great deal on phones with any provider.

Any specific questions on phones, plans, or anything else, ask me. And if youre gonna buy something anyway, come buy it from me and help a brotha pay his bills!

edit: that post makes it sound like I sell phones out the back of my van lol. I work for team wireless, a subcontracted company that sells cell phones in various best buys.

I sold all the networks service business to business for two years. I have sprint, I love it. Verizon is also good, but they use all of sprints towers in the metro area. I like sprint alot. They have good service (mine works all over in and out of roam ( I have no roaming option) I even get good service across south dakota!. Do what you will nick, but I really like sprint/verizon. Sprint seems easier to pick plans and get phones. Talk to redsatl95. Sounds like he would get you an honest set up. AT&T was awesome before the switch, they have alot of work to do to get the kind of coverage and quality that sprint/verizon already has. If you are gonna stay primarily in the metro area look at T-mobile? Hope I helped

Well I am in a contract still, And I am FAR too broke to buy out of it right now, but my current tdma phone is taking a crap and I was wondering if the At&t GSM service is any better than it was 2 years ago when it started. I have great service now (better I feel than my GF's sprint service) and I was just wondering if it would be bad if I went to GSM.

Ultimately do what you want, it has been a while since I demo'd the gsm phones. If you are comfortable with the switch it would be cool, especially if you have friends like dirty who are happy with the service

I know sprint is a little shitty in some areas aorund W St paul and maybe around you.

I use my phone differently, I am all over the fuckin place on a weekly basis so broad coverage is important to me.

Just adding my 2 cents worth. Good luck with it

Since you are an At&t tdma customer, you can go to cingular even though you are under contract. You will not get any rebates on the phones, but at the same time you will not have to pay the $150 upcharge for being a current cingular customer OR pay the $150 termination fee for getting out of your contract. I think this is only a Best Buy thing, but I could be wrong. That'd probably be your best bet. And yes, their gsm coverage is noticeably better than at&t's was. The mobile-to-mobile calling (included free on national plans) includes free talking to cingular and att customers whenever.

Ive had ATT, tmobile and now I am with sprint and hands down it is the best in my opinion. A few weeks back I went to texas and I did not have my phone go out once, now thats coverage. I have the treo 600 smartphone and it kicks ass! Downsides of sprint, definately more expensive than some other services, and horrible customer service....

I've had Voicestream (now T-Mobile), AT&T, and now Verizon. If your interested Nick, I would be willing to drop off one of my old Motorola phones with you...ones a V60 (non color, flip phone), can't remember what the other one is. I have no use for them anymore. Might have to pay AT&T to re-program them though.
