Do you use an external hard drive to backup your important files?

It occurred to me about a month ago that if something were to happen to my place and I lost my computer to any sort of disaster, all of the pictures and important files would be gone. I have a few external hard drives but they are in my place. Fire? Theft? No good.

So I spent a few hours thinking of what to do. Get all of my important files onto one of the drives and put that drive someplace where in the event something does happen, I am not totally fucked. I don't know about you guys, but I have pictures that date all the way back to my birth, which means they are more important than my life itself.

So I thought about what to do. I have a bunch of ammo cans that are sitting empty. So I thought about taking a 50 cal can and buying some foam, cutting it to fit then putting it in there. I looked at the prices of foam and this shit is pretty expensive. And I thought...is this really the time to be a cheap ass? Fuck no.

Then I got an idea. And I went to Amazon. And with Amazon Prime I got this bitch for under 18.00 shipped.

There are 3 layers of pretty decent foam. And since it's made for 4 guns, holding this old hard drive was no big deal. It has that break away foam so you can pull it apart to really hold your shit in place.

And here's where to buy if you'd like to use it for your hard drive or shit, your guns as it's a pretty decent piece for the money.

All of my computers (4 of them) save all important data to my server via network drives. The server room is located in what used to be the old cistern in my house behind a locked fireproof door. Makes transferring things like CAD files, photos, install images, documents and so on a snap. It is nice to be able to work on things in the house and walk out to the shop without having to dig around for a flash drive, I also don't have to worry about things being "lost" either.

Im not a fan of using a cloud, cannot trust an external HHD (they fail too), flash drives get lost and the personal computers are replaceable if stolen.

So... you have a basic home server to centralize data like most people with multiple computers?

This thread should have some good ideas for someone like you that apparently has an inadequate backup solution.


As for me, I back up my home fileserver onto a rotation of a couple external HDDs and keep it at the cabin for my offsite backup.

Long time photos can go to a disk/USB and thrown in a safety deposit box. IMO, disks have less of a chance for mechanical failure, plus you can hand copies out to family/friends so they can enjoy them, and then maybe borrow back in case something does happen.

Let alone how long it would take to upload. I use an external for my important stuff. Mirror a few things to a cloud storage setup. Mainly photos and videos of my son. Don't want to lose those.

I have the drives in my home server setup in raid 1 with 2 drives. I have a "backup" drive offsite. every couple of months I will swap out one of the "live" drives with my backup drive and let it rebuild. I also run VM taking snapshots breaking things and going back.

Site host offers unlimited bandwidth and storage. I have the most important things backed up there, on my network server, as well as burned to DVD in a burn bag. Other less important things just get backed up to the server.
